I second that Laura, put P straight into boots so you don't give up before he's had a chance to adapt to being barefoot. Seeing your horse uncomfortable barefoot is sometimes harder on the owner than the horse. It may take a whole hoof capsule growth cycle before his hooves are in good shape and he's comfortable walking around on hard ground barefoot. Avoid rocks/pebbles/gravel like the plague unless he's booted.
