It would be a help to me to be able to draw straight lines on my hoof pictures, but I have no idea how to do it (I’m a total computer illiterate). Can anyone suggest what software I should use?

Hi Kim

If you have Windows as an operating system, you have Paint. Open that and play around with it - it does a lot of neat stuff. It's the one I use for all the markups.

That is the vet-caliber software/hardware for precision diagnostics.

Would be totally awesome to work with but in reality, way too much "firepower" for what you need to train your eye and make improvements to a trim.

Lack of scale is what scares me off. My vet's 5 cm brass wire on the center face of the hoof wall (dorsal hoof wall) was helpful because I can scale to that on the computer screen. I found inexpensive  5 cm stainless steel head pins used in jewelry making that would serve.

If you want to be able to use specific measurements to determine what needs to come off (like 1 inch 0r 4cm) instead of a relative measurement (half way between end of toe and position of tip of frog for example), you can attach a marker of known length/size to any radiograph before the shot is taken, then use it as your scale when viewing the resulting image. Some imaging equipment does have the capability to produce a scale on the image as well.

You can use anything that is radio-opaque: a penny/dime, wire/nail of known length are some handily available possibilities. Just attach it to the plate in a location that doesn't interfere with the location of the image of the foot.
