Ideas for cooling feet
Bobbie Day
hello I’m wondering if anyone has any good ideas about how I can cool Desi’s feet off , she’s in casts and soft rides, we’re supposed to get to 105 today and all I can think about is how hot she must be?
im probably over thinking this like everything else but icing isn’t a option as it would cause moisture and another problem, I have ice wraps but I think that wouldn’t help her feet. i have a couple of those cooling towels maybe that would help? any ideas would be appreciated! |

Know it's too late for today but for future reference:
Did you end up casting her with pads as well? If so, not much point in using the Soft Rides as her feet won't be in contact with the pads and are already protected from ground contact. Using ice wraps will help cool the feet because they will cool the blood as it travels to her feet. -- Lavinia Moderator/ECIR Support |

Lavinia or Bobby - Can you please explain what the casts are that you are using with the Soft Rides? (What are they made of, how are they applied, are they in place until the next farrier visit, etc.) Since there was a problem with twisting boots and Scotty's feet are going to be addressed again on Thursday at UW, I would like more information as they mentioned putting a material in the Soft Ride that would prevent his foot from twisting. If it turns very hard (as materials that have been used previously in glue on boots) it won't work...Scotty is not comfortable with anything hard pressing on his feet at this point. Thank you for more information.
I don't like the idea of not being able to take any kind of boot off so that if need be, I can give Scotty a hosing down/bath, cool him off, etc. Our feel like temps are over 100 the next few days as well, and very humid. -- Deb and Scotty I/R Probably PPID Northwest Illinois, May 13, 2019 Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Deb%20and%20Scotty Photos: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=90619 |

Lavinia I did cast her or attempted to anyway. Dr.Kellon advised me to start with a couple strips to see how it worked for her.
I tried placing a few underneath but couldn’t get it to stick so ended up using about half a roll on each hoof. I checked yesterday to be sure there was no rubbing, I did put her soft rides back on because I wasn’t sure my job would hold. One actually came off but I slipped it back on and put a felt pad underneath that to help with sweat. I thought it might help with her arthritis, I’m hoping to try again in a couple days , hopefully I can do a good enough job to leave her boots off. It was very difficult to do her left side since she doesn’t want to keep that foot up. It definitely takes some practice. Would you mind looking at her toes when you get a chance? Hopefully they won’t have to come back much more. Thank you |

Deb you can look up Equi cast on line.
I actually ordered from a medical supply on line which was a lot cheaper and got the rolls in a couple days. Let me know if you want that information and I’ll post it. |

Thanks Bobbie. I googled it. Interesting. Will see what transpires for us today.
