Strange looking structure under sole

Good afternoon!

I’m not sure if Houston had a case of winter laminitis or only bad abscesses or both.  For months he’s been very cheerful and moving around like he doesn’t have a care in the world.  However his feet look bad: very stretched white line, ridges on the wall, sole looks pushed down.  I’m very curious to know what this structure is peeking out from under the sole??

Hard to tell from your photos. I recommend you use a stiff wire brush to clean the foot prior to taking photos. Then show more foot and identify each pic using ECIR protocol.

I added labels to the photo.  I don’t think taking photos per ECIR instructions would demonstrate the structure.  I’m wondering if this is the waxy sole.  I would think he would be obviously lame if it was the coffin bone??

Hi Joella,

I can see the area you are asking about but without a full set of photos and clean feet there is nothing to reference against to be able to make suggestions.

Agree with you that if this were the coffin bone he would likely be extremely sore.

Looks like he's getting ready to shed a dead sole and possibly frog?   Did he have a sub-solar abscess prior?  That could explain the clear separation between dead and new sole.  At this time you need to prevent bruising from rocks as that can lead to more abscesses.  I would start booting his hoof now so debris doesn't get between the dead and live sole.  Ideally use a boot that covers the whole hoof (not Scoots or Renegades) and/or put an athletic-type sock over his hoof inside the boot to keep out any gravel and sand that makes its way into the boot.  If you don't have boots, try newborn diapers and duct tape and use them to make disposable boots/wraps.  Just take the boot off 1-2x daily to air out for an hour, make sure the sole is still clean, and put on a fresh sock before booting up again.  If you're getting lots of moisture in the boot, try a generous sprinkle of Dr Scholl's foot powder to absorb it.

When it sheds (I would NOT do anything to speed it up as it is still protecting the new sole, unless I saw/smelled signs of thrush), the new sole will be very sensitive and uncalloused so you'll want to make sure he's protected and boot him anytime he's not on deep bedding at first, then gradually reducing the booting time as long as he has soft rock-free ground to start building up a callous on.

Thank you ladies!

no subsolar abscess but he did have a monster come out at the hairline above this area.

I’m working 12’s the next few days so I won’t see him in the daylight.

Great to know it’s very unlikely to be the coffin.

Cheers!

What you are seeing is retain sole.  How long has it been like this? Heels look good.  Nice heel buttress.  Decent frogs.  Flairs are an issue.  Looks like a good roll to help grow out the flairs.  Time, time.  The retained sole is passive, so leave it alone until you see fissure lines,  then see if you can get a side of the nipper in there to pop it off. Otherwise, leave it alone.
Does this help?

Crap, did not see that pic!  Yep, the sole is shedding.  I would keep this in a boot to protect it until new sole is ready

Thank you Diann,
that does help.  Thank you!

ive had this horse for 11? years.  That half moon ridge at the toe is new.  That and the significant white line separation makes me wonder if the coffin bones moved.

Hi Lavinia,  if you have time to look at the photos that would be great. If you’re busy no worries!
