Pete Ramey DVDS
Mary M.
HI,
I am interested in doing my own trimming for my mare. Am considering buying Pete Ramey DVDs, but it is significant expense. I attended Ida Hammer clinic couple years ago and got a lot out of it. Want to know if the Pete Ramey DVDs give practical advice for trimming and not just anatomy and pathology? And if others taking over their own trimming have found the dvds and books helpful? Thanks Mary Mary and Katie Chelsea, MI 2013 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Mary%20and%20Katie

Hi
Having had some hands on experience, I bought the "In The Trenches" DVDs. They are helpful for learning how to trim foundered horses and as a reference to go back to if unsure how to proceed. Not sure if it's worth $90 though. They show worst cases, as in the "get the saw" to cut off toes that are so long that nippers won't do it. It's good though to watch him trim-the technique gets embedded in your brain after watching it over and over. Amy in Va |

I have Under the Horse and In the Trenches DVD's series. Under the horse has a theory part in the begining that is very helpful, then he trims different hooves, healthy and not healthy. While he trims he doesn't go into a lot of detail around what he is doing and why but he explains a bit and you learn a lot by watching, but that's me. Maybe you know more about trimming and don't get as much out of it.
In the trenches was quite disapointing for my taste. The audio is not good and I don't find you can get much but again my own experience. What I have found a good learning experience is reading his long detailed posts where he explains very good in detail and watching "under the horse" several times. María Durán Madrid, Spain. |

Mary, I do not regret buying the "Under the Horse" dvds. They are full of invaluable information, and the anatomy part is incredibly important for understanding how to trim. I'm sure you won't regret it.
However you can also rent Under the Horse, and tonnes of other hoof trimming dvds from Pete Ramey and others, online at: https://www.giddyupflix.com/search.php I prefer to own them so I can go back to them over and over again. :) -- Kirsten Rasmussen Kitimat, BC, Canada |

I'll just add that I also enjoyed Pete Ramey's books, too, and Jaime Jackson's dvds and books. They helped me immensely in learning to trim my horse. I am also a fan of Hoof Help Online, run by James and Yvonne Welz, they have a subscription plan to access their material but it's very affordable and there's lots there to look at. Their technique is a bit different than Ramey and Jackson, but they have had incredible success with foundered and navicular horses, too. It's good to see a variety of 'methods' so you can see the similarities they share and really focus on those core principles when trimming.

Hi Mary. I did not use videos or books to learn trimming. Because of my learning style, I needed hands on and visual learning, so I attended 5 weeks of intense classroom and hands on trim days and have dissected hoofs to understand why I am trimming a certain way.... I think any trim video should have an in depth discussion of anatomy and physiology of the hoof, thats my humble opinion. Trimming makes more sense when you know what part of the hoof you are affecting and what you can change and not change. I would think that if you reached out to the Pete Ramey website, someone could let you know the content of the video prior to purchasing it. Good luck! Trimming is a journey unlike any other!!! And when you have the hoof in your hands, it is very rewarding to know that you can help your horse! And it builds a bond of trust....I could go on, but thats not what you asked for :)
