Can a horse who has had her ddft cut be rehabbed with boots only?
Linda Headley <hooves@...>
My foundered mare, Classy, has been in eggbar shoes since she had her
ddft cut. This was done as a last ditch effort to salvage her and save her life with Eleanors' support. My husband and I didn't think she was doing as well as she should be in her shoes. She finally lost the one on her foot that had the tendon cut, so we pulled the other one. She is getting along fairly well in soft-ride boots(cavallo boots are coming soon) and her feet seem less tender. However, my vet had said that she needed to wear the eggbars for support for atleast six months. He pastern is down somewhat, but she isn't doing too badly at all. Does anyone have experience with this or have any suggestions? Her hooves did grow out really well and her soles finally filled in with redden ultimates at first and then the surgery. Classy does have cushings, but is not yet ir. She is on an ir diet though. Linda, Althea, Woodrow, Herbert, and Classy |

Linda,
I answered your mail but I don't think you got it. First thing we need is current hoof photos. If her heels are properly positioned underneath her, the shoes might not actually be doing much, but your vet is the one that's had his hands on her and seen her 3-D so you probably should talk to him too. Please include a picture of her with the boots on too. Eleanor |

P.S. Shoeing isn't even an option for many of the horses Dr. Floyd
rehabs, including DDFT surgery, because they don't have any hoof to nail to. See: http://www.serenityequine.com/studies.html Eleanor |
