Boots for best traction in winter conditions

Heidi Wright

Hi all,

We already have gotten our first snowfall in northern Illiniois, so looks like a long winter ahead.  I have a 3 year old who has thin soles and he gets very ouchy on frozen surfaces.  Yesterday I turned him out in gloves, which helped, but I would ideally like to have a boot that I could insert a pad, and a boot that has the best winter traction.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Heidi

Hi Heidi,
It really depends on the kind of ice you have.  If you have sticky ice (I know that sounds dumb but I can’t figure a different word) then some of the agressive type tred patterns work.

In my area ice is very glass like.  Putting some manure ontop to freeze to it helps with traction.

I got small hex screws and screwed them into the bottom of the boots.  Using locktight might help keep them in.  I did two behind and two infront.  They were low profile didn’t throw off balance.  I’m thinking screws just in the heel area would be enough?

Hope that helps.

Equine Fusion sells closed boots with aggressive tread patterns (the all terrain sole) and a stud kit you can add on for even better traction on ice or in mud.  I remember seeing a promo video showing a pony with the studded boots trotting in circles pulling a sled or a cart on a frozen pond that was cleared for skating...it was impressive.  I will be trying the studs for the first time this winter on my horse's old EF All-Terrain boots.

Great ideas.  Thanks you Kirsten and Joella!

While living in NW Connecticut, we used Renegade bots with studs on our mare. She went out in a dry lot and never slipped in them. Often she would be outside when the other horses in the barn had to stay in due to slippery weather.
We have not needed them since moving to TN.

I have used the studs from easycare in a few of their boots which works very well for traction during turnout.   Also need fo purchase the tool to attach to a drill to get them on the boots.
