I have noticed when my gelding is having problems, he does have
puffiness over his eyes. It can't be fat, because it comes and
goes.
I assume it is fluid? Why is it there?

Yes, it is water retention for whatever reason. Hypothyroidism can
cause this, so can insulin resistance. It is usually the first sign for
me to suspect a horse may have IR.
It may have something to do with the body trying to balance PH levels
thereby retaining more water, or another chemical disturbance in the
fluid regulation.
Perhaps Dr.Kellon or others know the exact reason why this occurs.
