From the coats my horses are getting, I am expecting a late winter and plan to go ahead and body clip my horses.  From past experience, they will have regrown half of it by the first of November, and that growth, plus blankets, will get them through the winter. 
 
But if you are hesitant, then how about clipping where the horse sweats?  Between the front legs, under the mane if he/she has a long thick one like my Cushings mare, the face, and on the backs of the back legs, i.e. the buns...for example?
