We used a garden shredder for a while for carrots but it got exceedingly messy. That would do hay quite effectively but in the end I have found it is easier to buy bags of chop for my oldies. I use this with kwik beet and hi fibre nuts all mushed to porridge and grate the carrots in a food processor.
