In the document "Pain Relief Alternatives to Bute and Banamine" by Dr.Kellon in the Board files; she (Dr. K) writes regarding Nitroglycerin and Jiaogulan that "if you can catch the laminitis very early, when horses are showing signs of pain, but pulses are not greatly elevated, feet not hot, these may work. However, once heat and pounding pulses are present they will worsen pain by trying to force blood through vessels that are shut off by swelling or clots. Personally, I avoid these with acute laminitis." Article goes on to say "Once inflammation has quieted down, Jiaogulan is excellent for circulatory support."
