Reply to IR or NOT?
A huge thank you to Dr. Kellon & to all of the wonderful people who took time to reply to my post about my Mustang's "Non-IR" diagnosis after blood tests.... I really needed, and heard what you said about staying on top of the diet... I know that he doesn't need grass but I did need back up to continue my absolute, obsessive no-grass/no sugar ways... Your stories of slacking and the resultant horror will stay with me! Thank you, thank you....My guy will stand on a loose rein in our grassy fields knowing that there is a "head up" command and a neck slap waiting if he decides to violate the rules... No eating grass with a bit (ever) has always been a rule for my guys, so he was raised that way, and no eating while I am leading you somewhere is also a rule.... so yes, I am already quite a maniac and it actually is easy on him to have very clear rules. But now I will also not let those little sprouts in our dry lot go unpicked, and I will continue to kill off the perimeter outside, and not succumb to the insidious voice that tells me,... "well, a little bit can't hurt anything, anyway... don't be such a control freak"...
If I am ever in a temp stall situation on a grass field at a show, I will remember that sad story too and bring heavy mats from home to ensure that he can't dig through, not my lite weight snap together ones that I use on cement show stall floors... I am constantly awed by the selfless efforts of this group, and I am so grateful to God that you are here for me and the other owners and horses that need you. Elijah and I are the lucky few who have not had to go through pain and suffering prior to getting his IR diagnosed and under control; but I am well aware that it was "by the skin of our teeth" and if not for an inner conviction that my vet's diagnosis and treatment suggestions were totally inadequate, we would have had to learn the hard way.... Keep doing what you do and know what a blessing you are to the horse world! Meanwhile, I will be spreading the word about Minerals, etc. & praying for the work you do here and at the conferences to expand until there is, truly, NO MORE LAMINITIS! Sincerely, Michele and Elijah Mustang, Everson, Wa Jan 2015 https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/echistory8/files/Michele%20and%20Elijah%20Mustang%20Jan%202015/
