Re: Pain relief for very painful horse) WAS Need Help ( Jasper's really sore 8 hours after joint injections)
Hi Corrine
Thought I put up post yesterday but did not come through. You might think bout transitioning Jasper over to all ODTB Cubes until you can get your next hay crop balanced. You would add only Vit E, salt and flax. could give him a bit of your current hay for chew time if he needs it. Your CH shows you are giving 2000 IU of Vit E. I would up tat to 5000 IU. Make sure you are giving in caps with soy oil. Whether you choose to trim yourself or not, Jasper will benefit from your understanding of what the foot needs. Following cases on ECHoof is great visual way of seeing how these compromised feet can transform. Some of started by working with our farriers and trimmers between regular trims. These horses need more frequent touch ups as you have heard. Keep them out of appliances allows for that. The hoof can change quickly. Imbalances, so-called "growth spurts", possible abscess when yo are going in the right direction all are more easily addressed out of shoes. Have asked Dr Kellon to comment on the pain issue and using PQ with doxy and your ulcer protocol. Hang on. Being down helps them protect their feet. Make sure he is eating and most especially drinking well. He needs 5 gallons or so every 12 hours. Nancy C in NH ECIR Moderator 2003 FACT: Positive or negative changes to the foot accumulate over a period of months and years.
