Just to clarify here, it's true there is no primary pathology of the thyroid involved and suppression usually corrects when the IR/PPID is controlled and with mineral supplementation.  That said, some vets choose to use high dose thyroid (induce hyperthyroidism) to help obese horses lose weight. Long term safety of this is not established and it further suppresses the gland making weaning them off difficult.  Some vets also supplement more reasonable levels, to restore normal numbers, because it helps a lot of horses feel better.  It's not a necessary part of treatment, just an individual judgment call.
