Hi Jonni Jump,

Black oil sunflower seeds are not suitable for an IR/PPID horse as they 
have an upside down Omega3:6 ratio, ie., more omega 6's (pro-inflammatory) than omega 3's (anti-inflammatory).  The ground flax seed (crushed linseed) has an omega 3:6 ratio about the same as grass, about 4:1, so is a good addition to replace the fatty acids that are found in grass for horses on a hay only diet.
