I have the same issue w/ the grass in my horse's paddock.  It will die shortly due to lack of rain, but I ended up spreading shavings all over every spot of it.  My horse is SO much better now after just a few days.  I plan to ride him today, and he had laminitis on all four on the 8th from the stupid grass.  Shavings are cheap and they have worked so far.  I only  needed 2 bags.  Good luck, I hope you can make something work.
