Frances, thanks for your suggestion. The current wheat bran is a newer bag, and it looks and smells fine. Additionally, Audi had a few days when I was between wheat bran bags (I substituted an extra lb of beet pulp those days), so he was not getting what bran, but the digestive issues persisted.
