Crest hardness - any relation to insulin levels/ risk of laminitis flare up?

My farrier has said that she’s found crest hardness (specifically when it gets hard) to be a good indicator for when a horse might be at risk for a flare up/ relapse of laminitis. Is there any truth to this?

When my pony was going through her laminitic episode her crest was quite hard. Now that she’s doing a bit better, it’s significantly softer. Is this just a coincidence? Does crest hardness mean anything?
