Some big companies, like Pizzey in Canada, select only mature golden or brown seeds, discarding green or very dark seeds. Others use a process like this https://patents.google.com/patent/US4857326A/en . I don't know who supplies Triple Crown with their flax. Regardless of the method, stability is from 12 to 24 months when unopened if not mixed with other ingredients. Milling is an ultrafine sharp slicing process which apparently does not damage the fat deposits in the seed the way that crushing them for oil extraction does.
