Hay high in manganese

ironic_acres@...

I just got my hay results (listed in case file under Hay 2014). I have a friend who graduated Dr. Kellon's course and who is also a member of this group that will balance the minerals for me.  I have a question though: The hay is high in manganese (103). When fed at the amount my horses need, it comes close to 5 g per day (I think I did that math correctly).

Migo is hyper-sensitive to imbalances.  Should I worry about this amount as long as the other minerals are balanced?

Thanks for any ideas.

This really doesn't sound like anything related to IR.  You did the best thing by biopsying.  Let us know what you find out.

Here is an odd ball question regarding lumps and bumps

misyrabi

On Friday of last week, I had my vet out to check on 2 unusal lumps on my mare Bahj-Rha.  We did a needle aspiration for the lump under the jaw and had to surgically remove larger pieces of tissue on the side of her neck.

This the lump on the side of the neck is the odd part of this story and question.

The lump is mid-way between her jaw and her shoulder and midway between the bottom of the neck and the top where the mane starts.  The lump is a roundish flat lump that covers the size of my palm.

As my vet went to take 2 samples of the larger soft and pliable lump, she felt a much harder lump in the muscle of the neck.  She tried to remove the hard lump but was only successful in getting about half of it.  This mass was hard and felt like calcified material, almost like bone.  I hope to get test results back before Friday.  I am praying its benign.

My question to the group - how common is it for Cushings/IR horses to develop lumps under the jaw and the side of the neck?    She doesn't really have any of the described fat deposits on her body as the literature describes, but 2 odd lumps in really odd places.

One article I was reading suggested that the lump under the jaw could be a blocked salivary gland since it was one side (right) under the tongue.  So I am not tooooooo worried about that.  But the huge lump on the side of the neck with the underlying hard mass is worrisome.

Its odd and I am grasping at straws as to what the heck could have caused it.

Thanks in advance.

Which Equi Analytical Test?

Kristin Gerlach <kristin@...>

After reading the details on both of these tests I am wondering which one is recommended for hay samples being fed to an IR horse and I am planning to have someone help me balance the minerals?
Is it the Trainer(I believe this is the one I did in the past) or the Equine Complete (this one says it for when you are working with a professional to balance the diet)?
Thank you,
Kristin CO 2013

Hi Lorna,
Yes she eats only ODTB.
I do give her extra magnesium when she is tender or lame. That's still ok, right?
Thanks,

Thanks, Lavina. I looked at an online video about mixing it up, and when I saw all that sugar, it just didn't seem right. Appreciate it.

Argh!  Carol, I have sent you an invite to EC History 8; in the meantime, I am trying to un-moderate your posts, but Neo is not allowing me to even find you in the main list.  The new Neo is an incredibly frustrating innovation, that is making it very hard for members to post, moderators to moderate, and life on the groups in general difficult.  Hopefully you will get the invite to EC History 8.  If not, check your Yahoo email. Your user address is in capital letters - I couldn't get anywhere with that, so typed it in with lower case letters.  I am not sure if that has anything to do with this.

Thanks, and sorry for all this aggravation.

Hi...Chris

I am in Oceanside/Bonsall area and would be happy to talk with you.

In the meantime, it would be helpful for you to post a history of your horse ( age, breed, diet, lab work done)

Yoeu will need to join ECHistory8 but this only takes a few minutes.

Trying to join ECH8 Cushings group

Roger and Carol Watkins <WATKINS@...>

I am going crazy trying to join the ECH8 group in order to provide
info and get help for my elderly Cushings pony. I have tried a
variety of addresses given on this list and have problems...1.
sometimes there is a list of groups superimposed over copy from this
list 2. When I type in ECH8 group I am told that I cannot access this
group because I am not a member. 3. There is no place on the entire
page that says "join this group". Joining a group used to be so easy.
I had my pony tested a couple of years ago (without knowing the
proper protocol) and the vet said "the tests came back inconclusive
but since he has the symptoms of cushings lets just put him on
pergolide". Which we did and it hasnt helped much. He still hasnt
shed out his winter coat and I know his feet hurt. I do feed the
Balanced Timothy Cubes but would like to try to fine tune his diet to
get better results. Am I just not smart enough to get signed up or is
something wrong with my computer? I still have Windows XP.
Sincerely,
Beatle and Carol in Wisconsin

My horse just got diagnosed a few weeks ago. Is there anyone in San Marcos or Escondido, California that is  currently treating a cushings horse that I could talk to directly or stop by to discuss.  Thank you.

Sugardine (or Sugardyne)

Hi, folks. Been gone a long time. I have a question for anyone who might know. I had the vet out for x-rays yesterday, and he told me to make a sugardine paste to put on the bottom of Sabrina's foot for a small wound. It's sugar and povidone (10% iodine). I asked him if the sugar would soak into her system through her sole, and he said he didn't think so. I just need to double check. I researched it, and many people use it for lots of things - successfully, but they didn't talk about IR. Thank you for any input.

Hi Kim

That would be Dr. Kellon's NRC Plus course.

http://www.drkellon.com/coursedescriptions/nrcplus.html

A great course.  You can repeat the course until you get it. Once you've "graduated" there is back up from the NRCPlus Grads yahoo group.

You won't be sorry.

Re: Magnesium with ODTB

Lorna Cane

Hi Beverly,

ODTBC can be fed as the entire diet.
They are mineral balanced.

I don't know if that is what you are doing,or not.
But if so all you need to add is salt, vit E and flax.

Since ODTB cubes have magnesium in them, do we still add the full recomended supplemental dose of magnesium?

Re: Worming

Nancy C

Hi Michelle

Take a look at the dewormer file. Five day Panacur is no longer recommended.

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/EquineCushings/files/Deworming/

The file may give you better guidance but  if this horse were here, I'd probably test in four weeks before the next dewormer and if needed, I'd use ivermectin.  Your situation for housing, travel, work,  stablemates, etc is likely very different from mine.

Dr Kellon's dewormer short course is hugely helpful in sorting out these issues and establishing a plan specific for your situation.
