IR or Not?

Michele Cameron

Hi Everyone,

I am happy to report that Elijah is doing great! He is happy, fit, barefoot, & we are having fun gaining new skills in Dressage. ( which comes in handy when he tries to go rodeo on the mountain trails with me!) I have only posted his feet photos prior to proper barefoot trimming, so they don't look great, but I will take some new ones soon to show the changes since removing his shoes.

He has been off grass since last August 2014, was on a weight loss diet since September 2014 and on a very tight ECIR balanced mineral/Hay diet since February.

He has never had sore feet, or the dire circumstances that often happen with folks who come to this group looking for answers...

Now, we finally got some blood work done, and his diagnosis appears to be not IR.

So... what does that mean? He had quite a large crest and fat deposits last August 2014.... He still has a bit of a crest and his body has a fatty layer under the skin that I don't see on non-IR horses...

I am happy for him, but a bit confused... and now regretting that I didn't test him last fall before starting diet changes, so I would have more info.

Should I let him have a little pasture time now, perhaps with a muzzle? Can anyone help me to understand how he could have been cresty/fatty sheath etc., but not IR? Of course I will keep him on hay, tested and balanced with custom minerals for life, but can he have some sweet treats for instance? His updated CH & Test results are here:

Hi Martha,

I'm not sure who you "emailed" yesterday, but no post (message) came through to the yahoo group.  Could you copy/paste it and respond to this message with some details so we know how help you?  In fact, the best thing to do would be to go ahead and fill out a case history on your mini.  That gives us the details we need to give you the best advice.  You need to join our sister group ECHistory8, our "filing cabinet" where we store case histories,  to fill that out.  It should not take long to get approved.  The instructions for filing out the CH are on the main page.  Here's a link to that group:

Meanwhile, you may find our website will provide you with a lot of valuable  information, as well as the "start here" file.  Here are the links to those:

Hope that helps!  Waiting to hear back from you with more details!

Hi Maggie -
Thanks to you and LeeAnne I think I have been successful in updating my file! neo/groups/echistory8/files/Karen%20and%20Bay%20Lady/ Let me know what you think about my mare's lab results - done at Cornell. Her diet is different this year - no grain at all. Last year for concentrates, she was on E-Teck by Poulin grain - 1 cup 2x/day.

Hi Karen,

Try this. Rename your updated CH on your hard drive--something different than you used the first time, like "Bay Lady CH updated" or whatever you want to use. Then go back to your folder in ECH8 and "upload" (little purple rectangle towards the top right of screen) that file to your folder. If you want to delete your old CH after you upload the new one, you can. I just left mine in there when I updated mine, but LeeAnne may have other advice. I will ask her to chime in here.
Also, I noticed that there is a stray file in your folder, for Michelle Cameron's Elijah. Just ignore that and I will ask LeeAnne to take a look and see what's going on with that.

Hope that solves your issue!

Hi Karen,
Not to worry.  You should have received a copy of it and a few other documents when you joined ECHist8.  No matter.  If you (or any other members) need help with getting your info filled out and uploaded, contact me privately and we'll get it done. :-)

Thanks to the 2013 Neo Yahoo changes, the Database sections of the Yahoo groups no longer function properly.   To keep the database going it has been temporarily saved in PDF format and posted in a drop box location.  Due to this format change members now must send emails to edit or add information.  If you need to edit your information or want to add a new horse to the database, just  fill out the short form from our files section and email it

LeeAnne at ECIR.Archives <at> gmail <dot> com.  If you are having file access issues just send LeeAnne an email to get an email copy of the form.

Please update or add your equine to the database!  It won’t take long, and especially with the new columns, there will be big benefits to all horses with PPID and their owners down the road.   Already we have stats showing dosages on 250+ horses, information on occurrences of laminitis, life expectancy and more. With new horses and more updated data, the stats will be better than ever, answering some of the big questions regarding the use of pergolide.

> Can you give the Pervicox with J-herb?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following is a post from Dr. Kellon:

" No, Previcox is a COX inhibitor just like phenylbutazone or flunixin.
COX inhibitors interfere with nitric oxide generation.

It's also not safe for long term daily use in horses. The Equioxx package directions state "up to 14 days". The safety studies did not find any gastric or colonic ulcerations with oral use but they did find:

[from FDA submitted safety studies]
Firocoxib administered once daily at the recommended dose of 0.1 mg/kg body weight in a 0.82% oral paste formulation for 42 days causes oral ulceration and is associated with delayed healing of pre-existing oral ulcers. One horse treated at the recommended dose for 42 days had renal papillary necrosis.

Renal papillary necrosis is kidney damage. There were only 8 horses in that study group, so 1 out of 8 or 12.5%. These are also healthy, young horses.

Safety margin is very narrow too (as it is with bute)."

.....It helps to have the correct spelling when attempting an archive search.

Hi Lee Ann -
I didn't know there was a document telling how to deal with case histories until I found it today by accident while I was looking for something else - I haven't read it yet but tomorrow I'll have more time to do it.
Thanks for mentioning it.

Hi

Jasper's been doing real well on the 1 scoop twice a day of Lung EQ. Would it be a good idea to go to 1 scoop once a day now?  Or do i keep him on the 1 scoop twice a day?

He's quite lethargic and not eating real great, takes him 35 minutes to eat 2 cups of timothy pellets, with supplements.

Lj,

When you check the archived messages for Jiaogulan and tranquilizers message #81238 comes up with Dr. Kellon's response to your question.  To see the question the member asked go to #81238

I would take her off 48 hours before her appointment. All
tranquilizer/sedative drugs have blood pressure lowering effects to
some degree.

Most of the questions we members  think of  when we first join or as time goes on have been asked and answered over the years so there is a wealth of information in the Files and archived messages.   Starting your search first in these places often gets you a response that fits your scenario.

Hope this helps,

Hi Maggie -
Sorry - I can't seem to update my folder on ECH8. I got it filled out - saved it to my hard drive - but when I clicked on my folder name - I never saw an "Add File" anywhere. I tried clicking on various things and got to a screen that asked for folder name and then said: "Save" - which I did but then nothing happened - and I couldn't find the updated file anywhere anyway!
Help!
