Bounding pulse left hind on JJ

Rebecca

-. I asked my vet about removing the clog on the left hind and he said it was helping hold things in place. But jj does not want to stand on that left hind now. The pulse is pounding in the left hind now. Help.

Vet Has Question About Testing During Seasonal Rise

Lynn

My vet came today to float Relevante's teeth, give E/W Nile and Potomac Horse Fever vaccinations and do a fecal count. We talked about Relevante's recent two bouts of soreness..i have to add Lavinia's "boots" made from matting/duct tape/vet wrap worked perfectly. They lasted 4 days. Took them off last evening and today i could detect no soreness. My vet had me walk him up and down the aisle and then again at a faster pace and could detect no soreness. I had told him i wanted to pull blood today for an ACTH test. He talked with Cornell before our appointment today and they told him now was not the time to test due to the seasonal rise and that i should wait until November. We talked about what i learned here. He said he would do the test but asked that i pose the question to the group so he can get a better understanding of why i would test now, what we would glean from the test and to what benefit. His understanding of the seasonal rise is that it is not a steady increase but can fluctuate up and down. I gave a very simplistic answer - that testing now allows you to see if there has been an increase in the ACTH number so that one can determine if increasing the Pergolide dosage is warranted in order to maintain control of the ACTH versus letting it get away from you.  That may not quite be the right answer. If not, i sure want to know. But more importantly is there a better explanation i can give him to help him get his head around this approach versus what Cornell told him? (Just to confirm we are going ahead with the test, i'll post results when i get them) Also, i got my hay analysis today and uploaded it. I'm trying to understand it but would like a second set of experienced eyes to tell if it's safe to feed without soaking.

Re: Cabergoline- advice needed

LJ Friedman

Jesse is now receiving 2 ml of cabergoline every 10 days. That works out to costing $7.50 per day.  My takeaway:  cabergoline fine for ease of administration for a show horse who travels. And for horses on high dose cp. 22 mg or >, or where the cp no longer does the job.

Jesse now gets 2 ml of cabergoline every 10, days.  On last injection day, Thursday, i noticed his head down and not eating his food.  ( not too often that he doesnt eat well) next day. He is brighter and eating.  Might apf be an idea for  a day or two around injection time?

Re: Cushings/IR under control. Horse is not

Kathy Thomas

Hi, Karin,

I had my mare seen by an equine chiropractor every 6-8 weeks for a while and acupuncture as well.  My problem may have been different from yours.
I had a custom saddle made for Donna, and it was a terrible fit.  I will try and make a long story short:  The saddle put enormous pressure on her wiithers,
and Donna would drop her right hip to relieve the pressure.  This caused subluxations along her spine and neck and poll.   She would stop and refuse to go forward,
and kick out when made to move.  I finally sold that saddle to a horse that it actually fit, and got a totally different cut of saddle second hand, and it was
almost mystical how well Donna went in it.  So, I am saying that the combo of good regular chiro to relieve pain  and a proper saddle fit are the two key elements
that solved my problem at that time.

Has Inky always been this way?  I do not know what HPA is.

WAS Re: Follow up rads - Marra's fronts post-trim NOW update on Marra/possible ovarian tumor

Jon and Heather Fowler

Quick update on Marra.  Diet is good, trim is not perfected yet, but she is losing ground and I've been feeling like there must be some undiagnosed something driving her worsening issues.  Had ovarian palpation and ultrasound done today.  Left ovary is almost 3x the size of the right ovary.  Right ovary is tiny and completely inactive.  Suspect granulosa cell tumor and will be sending out bloodwork next week to run Anti-Mullerian Hormone levels (AMH) at UCDavis (test is only done on Mondays and I missed the shipping window to have it run the 27th).  I posted her ultrasound pictures in her case history.  Will keep you posted on what the labwork shows.

Re: Cushings/IR under control. Horse is not

I was thinking kissing spine as well but decided not to mention it if clinic X-rays weren’t an option.  I have no experience with kissing spine, other than knowing several people whose horses were diagnosed with it.

Ground work can be lots of fun if you approach it that way.  Not only do you get to direct the horse, you are able to see him in action!  Just as in riding, it helps to have good instruction.

Uncompensated IR

Patty Franklin

A friend and I both have horses whose Cornell blood test results indicate they are "uncompensated" for IR. I don't find an explanation for the term when I search the files. Can someone please explain what this term means? Also, as owners and caretakers are we expected to do something other than the diet and exercise to get our horses to a "compensated" state?

Re: Welcome to Patricia and Dancer!; updated case history help needed

Hi Patricia and Genevieve,

I've cleaned up Dancer's case history folder so that there is only your updated version of her case history containing the new Leptin information and the sub-folder for Hay Analyses.

I know Genevieve was being super nice and trying to help but when a case history isn't uploaded by the equine's owner it makes more work for the owner and adds to confusion.  Additionally it gets a little sticky, especially if there is an error.  Not that there was but if.   Since Patricia has uploaded a fixed version I have deleted Genevieve's copy so all is well.

Re: Welcome to Patricia and Dancer!; updated case history help needed

Patricia Evans

Hi Lorna,

I think I fixed it. When I put the results in the top line of the leptin box, they showed up under ACTH. When I put the results in the second line of leptin, they showed up under leptin, but in the second line, not the top line.  But the results are there now. I uploaded an updated case history but I can't do anything about the case history Geneveive was fixing for me, so I now have two; mine is the newest because I deleted my old one.

Thank-you!

Re: Golden paste for ir/ppid

celestinefarm

LJ, Golden paste( I had to look it up, had no idea what it was) contains mostly turmeric, which is contraindicated in IR mares, as it weakly binds to estrogen receptors, and there are several non equine studies per Dr. Kellon that demonstrate it raises insulin levels.

Re: Adding herbs etc to a forever hi insulin horse? in a do no harm fashon.. suggestions please

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

Turmeric may not be a very good idea since it increases insulin secretion.

Hi Vicky
I have fixed up your folder as you have more than one equine.  If you have any questions don't hesitate to email me.  :-)
I also put your links into your signature for you.  You can edit your signature here if you need to.
You can find directions for doing signatures and see how to set up your case history folder so the support team can easily find the information they need in the wiki:

Quations about APF

Kim L. Ramsden

My mare cat has been on 1 mg of prescend for 11 days after I had to back her off the 1 mg dose because she has the pergolad veil. I started the AFP 18 days ago and the 1 mg prescend 11 days ago so my question is how long should I keep her on the APF or does she need to stay on it for the rest of her life? Will APF affect the blood work going forward? Do I have to stop the APF to draw her blood? And my final question if I should take her off APF do I titrate the dose backwards? Sorry for all the questions but want to do the best for cat thank you Kim

Re: Cushings/IR under control. Horse is not

Josephine Trott

HI Karin,
Out of 3 horses I've known with kissing spines, one is back in work (2 were retired from riding) - she had steroid injections in the spine, year off work, reintroduction to riding slowly with lots of 'good posture' for the horse (back up, abdominals engaged) - but the owner still feels the horse does better bareback rather than in a saddle.
Diagnosis requires spinal X-rays.
Good article on kissing spines at thinlineglobal dot com website.
good luck
