When uploading your CH, make sure it is going to your folder.  There are a lot of loosey goosey CHs at the end of all the folders.  If you are missing yours, look there first.

Re: Blood test result - low blood glucose?

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

If she had a malabsorption problem you would be seeing drastic weight loss. Not likely. Nothing much can be said about how high it did or didn't go without seeing the levels before glucose and at earlier time points. By two hours they should be almost or entirely back to normal.

That leaves two options. It's normal or there was delayed gastric emptying. Since this was a 2 hour sample, there would have to be very significantly delayed gastric  emptying and there's nothing that would explain that. This leaves normal.  Since glucose degrades quickly in samples that are not spun down immediately and kept cool, it's also possible the glucose number is incorrect.

Worried mom

Bobbie Day

I’m worried that Desi may be having another episode,
actually I don’t know if it’s in her feet or it’s her arthritis.
she was making wonderful progress, walking good,
we took her boots off a couple days a week, we
put her in easy boots and new equine jogging shoes
which are much lighter than her soft rides.
In the last week has a really hard time getting around. I’m kind of
on the fence about continuing her exercise, we walk
then stretch. She’s been getting mov-ease (mbh) and
her jherb, ACL, and salt. I had to go back to my senior supplements from Uckele  , I’m waiting for a custom mix.
the only thing that’s changed is we got a new cutting
of grass hay, same field same grower. She also had
her immunizations about three weeks ago but seemed
to be fine from that, I’m am trying to rinse her hay until I can test it
theres no alfalfa in it.
she does seem to loosen up after I’ve walked her for a bit
so I’m thinking maybe arthritis?
im still injecting her with the Chondroitin Sulfate
which has been helping her alot.
i do give her a quarter tablet of previcox a couple days
a week. I do plan on making her a appointment for X-rays and to see where she is with the IR.
i was to have her teeth done yesterday but optedto wait since she was obviously in pain.
i thought maybe she was worse because she does tend to stomp
from the flys, going to get her some leg protection for that.
I’m so worried about her, I’m thinking of trying the
Hylarin from Uckele, Dr. Kellon can you suggest
anything else I could try?
ive updated her history. I’m just beside myself
with worry, should I continue to walk her or not?
Oh and we have been using the Insulin Wise.
thank you

Jaini, many thanks for kindness and advice. I've read through it very carefully. He had been getting steamed hay up until this week but since Tuesday I've been giving him different hay with more Timothy in it which I'm soaking in cold water for an hour, rinsing and then steaming. I've cut out his usual feeds of Simple Systems Purabeet and Lucie Nuts the last two days and he is only getting Simple Systems Metaslim https://www.simplesystemhorsefeeds.co.uk/products/viewhorsefeed.asp?id=17&name=MetaSlim
As well as his hay - it seems to have some magnesium in it but should I add more? He has a salt lick available too but again should I add salt to his feed. I don't have a scales to weigh hay but he is not hold much weight but should this be weighed - he is walking around the yard with access to a stable and in on a deep bed at night - I've stopped all feed at the moment bar hay and metaslim

Re PPID

She was in a complete panic when they drew her blood. She reared and ran backwards. She used to be very good but a bad vet tech at an endurance ride jabbed her hard for a blood draw and she's panicked ever since. I read that can cause acth levels to rise from the other gland, PD vs PI, causing a false positive.

Minus the weight, she has no other signs. No long coat, delayed shedding, reduced appetite, lethargy, etc...

We felt it would be best to redo the test when shes fully pain free and find someway too pull the blood without causing stress. If she is positive again, pergoglide it is. :(

Hi, Sheena - we have uploaded the rads into the Case History Photos:  https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=92062

It does look like the right front coffin bone is perilously close to penetrating the sole. However, have a read here for perspective:  http://www.ironfreehoof.com/severe-laminitis-case-study.html

I also created a signature for you; if you would like to change it, then

Go to Subscription on the left hand menu, and click on that.

Scroll down to the Signature box. Just above that, click on the two little boxes that say:
Use Signature For Web Posting

Use Signature For Email Posting

Then, type in your name, horse’s name, general location, and date of joining.  Add links to your photos and case history by copying and pasting them in. Note: after the link is copied, put one space after it to make it “live” or “clickable”.

Here is the most important part! Scroll down even further, all the way to the bottom of the page,  and hit the blue Save button.

Hope that helps! Hang in there, and let us know what else we can do.

They do the wet chem and can test whatever I want to test for. I'll ask if they can send it to the calgary place instead of where they usually send hay for testing. I'll give them this list and see what they can do. Thanks

Re: UPDATE on Shahtahr and a hay question

My guess is that Jennifer's test results are 1920 ppm Nitrate as Nitrogen, which converts to 8506 ppm Nitrate ion (off the charts sky high), which means 0.8506 % nitrate ion.

My calculations based on the assumption that 1920 ppm is Nitrate as Nitrogen:
1920 PPM Nitrate as Nitrogen x 4.43 = 8506 ppm Nitrate (ion) , which when divided by 10,000 = 0.8506 % Nitrate (ion)

If I'm right, this hay must be soaked to reduce nitrates to a safe level.

Vaccination reactions

Thought I would report how Chappie's vacs went this time.   He usually gets a swelling on his neck about the size of 1/2 a cantaloupe.   It doesn't restrict his movement and he still has a great appetite, but it concerns me.   We have eliminated any vacs not really needed for his situation.   He hates needles and my old vet had me snub him up pretty short and he would just kind of jump in, give him the shot and hop out.   Not ideal to say the least.   My 2nd vet, an experienced horseman, was wonderful.  Just had Chappie in the stall, talked to him, and gave him the shot pretty smoothly.  But Chappie still got the swelling, just not as big.   We talked about maybe his tensing up his neck muscles resulted in the swelling. That lovely vet just retired.  Now the 3rd vet is really great too.  She also is an experienced horsewoman, with Arabs.   As she did her exam, Chappie kept nuzzling her.   She asked if he got treats, and of course he does.   She gave him a Stabul nugget and became friends forever.  She gave him his shot as I gave him a treat and he didn't even notice, and was relaxed and soft.
So that was a difference.  BUT, I also did the oral Benadryl - Bute routine this time.   Absolutely No reaction at all.  Not even a little bump.  So the Benadryl and bute really worked, and perhaps, ?, having a relaxed neck helped some too.

Re: Feeding after weight loss achieved

Sherry Morse

Hi Brittany,

Normally once you get to a target weight you can feed 2% of body weight as maintenance but - as with everything else - you may need to tweak that to maintain his weight.  The fat pads usually decrease once the IR is under control but some horses always have some to a limited extent.
