Re: Switching from Pergolide to Cabergoline

UPDATE: Knight had the exact same reaction after his second injection as he did his first. At 10 days, off feed. By day 11 lethargic, depressed, off feed.
We gave his third injection (full dose. 1ml) yesterday (day 11)
Today he is slowly, very slowly, starting to eat.
I gave 1/2 dose banamine yesterday and today to keep him eating... something. He only ate about 1/4 of his dinner last night. He looks like a skeleton :( I dont know how much more I can take. But I will keep going, for him. Even with his depressed attitude, he is still the same horse, mentally.
I will give his next injection on day 10 and hope he doesnt "veil" as badly.

Hi Kelly,

If you enter Insulinwise into the Search box,you will see a number of messages,by members who have used it.
It hasn't  been a total success, in their experiences.

Hi, Nancy.
To clarify, this morning you reported a message to you as spam, so you were automatically unsubscribed.

It might have been a problem with your spam settings, or,  you might have hit the Junk button instead of the Delete button (I've done it, probably more than once).

Totally agree with Dr. Kellon - don't see anything out of the ordinary.

When you have a chance, ask your vet specifically what she sees that is prompting her concern.

Re: prascend Question

Sherry Morse

Hi Kelsey,

Could we pretty please ask you to get a case history up on your donk so we have all the background info in one spot?

As far as the pergolide veil - it can last for a few weeks in horses but as with so many other things, it varies.  I'm not sure if being a donkey is part of the issue as well, but if you didn't start him on APF already (you can read more on that in your welcome message: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/251621) you may want to get some, stop the Prascend for a few days while giving him the APF and then continue giving the APF while restarting him on Prascend.

prascend Question

khovi90@...

-- Hello all, I started my eight-year-old donkey on prescend About a month ago, his appetite has greatly decreased and he will only eat hay. Which normally isn’t an issue and it actually helped him lose some weight but I use a handful of low starch horsefeed to give him his supplements and herbs. With him turning his nose up at grain, it’s very hard to get his thyroid medication and supplements in him.

for those that have used prascend, how long did the decreased appetite last?

my guy is on half a tablet once a day.

thanks!

Judging by the protein, fiber and mineral profile, this hay is likely over half alfalfa which is why it's so difficult to balance.

Just for the record, Amy, can I assume that you increased the Prascend by half of a tablet or 0.5 mg?

Thank you for this! You guys are fantastic. I will be eager to see what the end results are. Although Jewels insulin seemingly is trending upwards with every specimen drawn twice a year...this product I have stopped.

Re: When is it safe to hand walk after laminitis

Sherry Morse

Hi Kelly,

Please reference your welcome letter's section on exercise (https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/235878) as well as the exercise section of our website: https://www.ecirhorse.org/DDT+E-exercise.php and the email reply Lavinia sent you the other day: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/253218

IMO instituting diet changes will probably help more with Buddy's insulin numbers at this point in time, but I wouldn't be expecting him to be happy with forced exercise (even just handwalking) for quite a while yet.

Re: Should I increase Prascend?

Amy

No photos as I've never had them done.  Not sure why there is even a file on it.
I guess I've never really thought I needed to.  He's never been really lame, but has had 2 foot sore episodes.  My farrier did say if it happens again she will want x-rays to see what's going on and to make sure she isn't missing anything and trimming properly.
I understand LJ has great help with Ivanaka.
If DR. Kellon thinks this is a route to take, I'm willing to give it serious thought.

Ps....while waiting for a reply and me updating my CH, I did up his prascend 5mg.  Figured it wouldn't hurt.

Just want to do what is best for him.  He's my Guy and the best ride I've ever had.   Lol

Calcium

nikkibob1994@...

Trying to balance my hay.
My Calcium is 88 and magnesium is 20 which when calculated means I need to 24 g of magnesium...... that means a 2lb would only last me 37 days instead of 360 days...something seems off. I have added my hay analysis.

Kelly,

You don't need to pull endogenous ACTH in addition to  the TRH stim test as you will already have that value as the pre-stim value.

Re: When is it safe to hand walk after laminitis

Vanessa Register

I am hand walking my mare who is recovering from Lamaitis.
I started in boots on soft flat ground we are now up to 3 miles.
today when I took her to the fair grounds to walk the track, I turned her out so she could roll, and she took off.
Bucking, then cantering with flying lead changes, and then the most beautiful floating trot.
I did change her from hoof boots to Formahoof and what a change.
Your horse will let you know when they are ready for more.

Re: Should I increase Prascend?

Amy, I see reference to a photo album in your signature but there isn’t a link.  Is there a photo album with a broken link or just no photos?  It would help if we had access to hoof photos.
I don’t see any harm in increasing his pergolide but that might not affect the insulin.  If you decide to do that, sooner is better.
As LJ says, there is another drug being used to control insulin, but only if everything else is in order.  Dr. Kellon would be the one to contact about it’s value in your situation.  LJ is an enthusiastic supporter.
