Grey Horse Melanoma and AAKG

Helen Connor

Dr. Kellon,

A friend as two grey Quarterhorses that have been diagnosed, one with IR and one with IR/PPID. The vet believes both have DSLD. These horses are in their 20s. Their dam had grey horse melanoma but my friend says it wasn't a problem for mare. The sons are developing masses in their mouths and on their genitalia.

Recently, my friend read that AAKG should not be used on horses that have "malignancies." Does this mean that she should not use it to boost the effectiveness of J-herb, since her horses have active grey horse melanomas?

Thank you.

Re: Jiaogulan

Dr. Kellon, I'm confused about this recent series of messages on J-herb.

I thought I was told to mix J-herb with a little water to make a paste (which is does nicely). Blessing has been using it this way for nearly 3 years. Now I see it should be mixed with oil instead of water? Are we switching to oil in our recommendations?

Thank you for clarifying.

Kelly - I used the pre-ground flax for a year or so, and then discovered that I could greatly reduce my cost by grinding my own flax. It's quick and easy and saves me money.

Re: Help for Teeny immature neutrophils high CPK

TERRI JENNINGS

I finally got the last part of Teeny's bloodwork (CBC).  It is uploaded in my case history.
I requested that the vet call Cornell to have them run a Lyme test last week and they did.  It was negative.  I do not have the paper copy of the result.

Teeny continues to not want to eat her full ration of Timothy Balance Cubes.  She seems to be as energetic as usual but she is getting skinnier by the day.  I caught her eating shavings the other day.  She also tried to eat a big piece of bark when I put her in the  round pen for a few minutes while I hosed out her stall.  I took it from her of course but this is not typical behavior for this little old lady.

We are quite concerned about her and the vet is unsure how to proceed.  Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Phytoquench

Michele Goldberg <ladipus@...>

Hello
Can Phytoquench and Laminox be given together? Is Phytoquench used primarily for pain relief ? I’m a bit confused as some reviews say it offered pain relief and made laminitic horses more comfortable ?  While other reviews says it helped allergies /immune function? I’m considering adding it to my mares supplements-shes been getting Laminox since her acute bout of steroid induced laminitis in June ...she also has allergies ...so I’m wondering if I gave both would I get double benefit of pain and allergy relief?!?

Thanks Dr Kellon,
I am awaiting bloodwork from
Cornell. We had a recent bout of laminitis so I am really scared but I will wait for the results and your expert guidance. This group is a Godsend to me

No, it won't dissolve. You might have better luck mixing it evenly into ground flax. The color is so obvious you should be able to see if there is even distribution and the flax has enough fat that it shouldn't settle out.

They included a small scoop that holds 1 gram - according to their measurements. By  eye - I divide the total amount of the scoop in half. So I'm feeding at the high end.  I have ordered a milligram scale. I also tried mixing 1 gram  with 50 ml water in a dosing syringe and giving a portion, but I found that it's not easy to get an even distribution in water. It doesn't seem to dissolve.

Kelly,

I don't blame your vet for being uncomfortable. She/he has probably never even heard of it. I have an information file for vets but since your insulin ( in the CH) wasn't horribly high I would try  metformin first.

Re: Looking for feedback for Rio

Hi Heather,

Your history doesn't document some of this so let's back up a bit. It looks like you started metformin on 3/4 and stopped on 5/7. Do you remember the start date for Invokana? Pergolide started 3/3 at 0.5 mg, up to 1 on 3/6, down to 0.5 again on 4/20.  When did you increase back to 1 mg?

I'm confused on these insulins. The only one in  your case history is 551 uIU/L on 4/28.  Could you please list the dates and results of all insulins and glucose after the laminitis?

Re: Invokana- How can I get it for my horse

I have a human glucometer. It's accurate enough. Be sure to read all the literature about calibration, use and accuracy before buying. My results have been plus or minus 5 pg/ml of the lab values, so I feel comfortable with the results from my unit. I don't use the lancet to draw blood but rather use a drop of the blood from any blood draw the vet does at the time of testing. You'll have to learn to use the lancet to draw blood through horse hide.

It is not a money saver. The device itself is cheap, a lost leader for the sale of the supplies. The device is designed to be used at least once a day, every day, so supplies should be used up quickly. The test strips, lancets and calibration fluid are not cheap and can have short expiration dates. It does NOT test insulin.

LJ-
thank you! A timely response as my vet is coming today. Would using a human glucometer help? This would give me blood sugar values but not sure it would test insulin levels which I believe are the problem....has anyone had success in using a human glucometer?

Until Dr. kellon  answers, you need a prescription from a veterinarian. With that prescription I think all of us go through Canadian pharmacies and each tablet costs anywhere from two dollars to three dollars depending on where you get it.

I’ve been using this product for over five years. I don’t know why, but I like it. I use  2/3 of a cup which is I believe the recommended dose for a typical 500 kg horse? Something like that.

Re: Podcast episode

Lynn

I listened to the podcast over the weekend. Fantastic job Alicia, Jaini and Kathleen. I feel like I eat, breathe and sleep this stuff ever since Relevante was diagnosed just trying to stay on top of all his issues, but I learned new things from the podcast and heard explanations of what our horses are dealing with in a manner that makes it easy to explain it to other people. (I even had my Mom listen to it and she got it!) I've sent the link to the pros that take care of my boy and will continue to look for opportunities to spread the information around. Thanks again for sharing!

Invokana- How can I get it for my horse

Kelly Gilmartin

Dr K-
Can you provide guidance on how I can get my hands on Ivokana for Insulin in my 20 year old Morgan. I am concerned about getting his insulin levels down without being able to exercise. How do I dose? Do I need to get it through the human supply chain or can I get it through a vet?

Many thanks for your help,
