Although this year's hay is reasonable - NSC is 11.5% (ESC 8%) - last year's hay was high at 15.2% (ESC 6%) and no laminitis issues.

I just wanted to say to all of you going through this how sorry I am. I can’t imagine how stressful it is for all of you in Oregon and California.
Keeping you all in my prayers that you and your families (and horses) won’t have to evacuate and you’ll be safe.
Thinking of everyone 😢

I hope I'm not repeating info that's already been posted.

There is an international group called Cowboy 911 on Facebook. They are an all-volunteer nonprofit that has been helping evac livestock and pets in California, and now in Oregon and Washington. Terri, you might post your availability there. See https://www.facebook.com/groups/270203390408097/.

Stay safe and good luck.

Dr. Kellon, ever since Chappie was diagnosed I've  had to buy hay from several different sources to get enough each year.   Out of 6 different hay loads from 2017 thru 2020,  there were 3 with  WSC + Starch over 10%.  Would you like separate  votes for the 3 above 10% and one to represent the below 10% loads?   Chappie has been fine with all of them.

Fires and evacuation space available

TERRI JENNINGS

Ann’s post made me think about how hard we all work to keep our four legged kids healthy. It really does take a lot of attention to detail. We have been posting our available pasture space for any evacuated horses on Facebook but so far no one has needed it.  We are in Arcata, CA.  If anyone needs space during these horrible fires please let us know. All of my horse help is well trained in medicating, testing and soaking hay, picky eaters, first aid, and paying attention to the details of caring for our high maintenance IR and PPID horses.  Please message or call 707-845-8737 if you need a safe space for your horses.

Re: top line,

Hi Sandy,

Without a case history and pictures it's almost impossible for us to answer this question.  Has this mare ever actually been diagnosed with IR?  I believe from looking at previous messages she is PPID which can cause a loss of muscle tone if it isn't treated.  Is she being treated for it?  What is her current weight?  What is her ideal weight?  Is she having soundness issues?  If not, how much is she being exercised?

Again, thee are many reasons for loss of topline in a normal horse, but without knowing details there's no way to even begin to address this question.

Re: New Poll - Important #poll-notice

Just a note to encourage everyone reading this to consider taking this poll and as a reminder, you need to add WSC and starch to get NSC.

Could you post a few photos from different angles? Topline is about 50% muscle and 50% fat. Unless the tips of her spine are protruding up higher than the muscle on either side of them, her muscling is normal.

Just a reminder here that we do NOT want your ESC + starch number.  This poll wants to know WSC + starch, which is NSC.

Thank you Dr Kellon and Cass.  This is very helpful.  Much appreciated.

And I'll look for your evacuation list Cass.  Thanks for pointing that out!  Yes, it's stressful,  especially when you have large animals that you can't just throw in a car on a minute's notice.  We don't have our own truck and trailer, so there's that complication too which is why I moved them earlier this week - my friend was passing by with space in her trailer and open paddocks at her other barn.

Best,
Ann

Daisy, there’s a link to your case history, and one to your photos, in your signature.  If you look for a message you’ve sent, such as the one I’m replying to, you will see it there.  Or you can find it on your signature page by clicking on the ‘Subscription’ tab.   Once you get to it, you can bookmark it to find it more easily, unless your bookmarks need paring, as mine do.
