Kim, you and Shomee obviously had a wonderful life together. Thank you for thinking of how he might help more horses, even now. Wishing you the best in this sad time.

Re: feed question post laminitis

Cherie Bandrowski

Thank you, Dr. Kellon. Here are pictures I took with my cell phone of the radiographs.  The vet is coming out Thursday for updated blood tests.  I will see if I can also get copies of the labs taken in June rather than just a verbal, "she doesn't have IR". I went to the link on "Diagnosis of PPID and IR" so I would "be on the same page regarding testing and protocols" and got confused.  The title refers to PPID and IR but the content refers to PPID and EMS.  I read under treatment in the summary that IR is not a disease.  So I'm not sure what I should ask the vet for regarding testing.

Thank you Kirsten. I spoke to a vet today who has done cryotherapy and he agreed for me to send him the pics I took and see what he could do to help. Hes located quite far from me but sometimes comes here for dental work. When my vet calls me back with the test results I will ask him if he would be willing to learn how to do it. Its super frustrating because I'm at his mercy really. The travelling vet doesn't want to do it unless I have someone who can do post care treatment since he wont be able to, due to distance. So I'm still pushing and searching for help.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Kim.  He is in green pastures now, with friends and family that have gone on before him.

Yes they are in my province but Ontario is a big place. They are located a good 8 hours from me. I'm in a bit of a dead zone when it comes to feed, vet care, and competent farriers 🤦‍♀️

Re: Shomee passed this morning

Kim, I’m so sorry to learn of your loss today.  Thank you for sharing a bit of Shomee’s personality with us.  That’s very kind and generous of you to support veterinary research in that way.  I’m sure UC Davis appreciates your gift.  I’ll have you in my thoughts.  May your good memories prevail.

Hi Allison,

You could ask your vet to contact mine for more info on the cryotherapy.  I will private message her name and the name of her clinic to you to share with him, she is also a member here but probably has not seen your post.  It is definitely a veterinary procedure because sedation and pain control is needed but having watched the process several times it does not appear to be complicated.  The first time she did it we trailered to her (6hrs away), and spent 2 nights there so she could do a full sedation.  After that she said she was comfortable trying it at our home without laying him out on the ground if I could source the liquid N, so now she does it on her bi-annual visit to our area.

Movement always helped my boy's swollen sheath, too.  I think have a photo of it at it's worst in our album.  It was so swollen he was having trouble peeing.

Kim I'm so sorry to read this but thank you for thinking of others and wanting to see what can be learned from Shomee.

How strange!  I thought they were located in your province, with Ontario in their name.  Usually Aurelia is always so helpful.  Maybe something to do with your local stores?

Thank you for your condolences.

I had another long talk with the vet at UC Davis and she said the last few weeks have been really crazy and not sure why.  I asked her if she thought that a huge factor could be all the wildfires, smoke and particulates in the air for such a long time and our beasts having to live in it 24/7 might have anything to do with it.  She wasn't sure but wasn't dismissing that idea.

I have decided to have them do a full necropsy in the name of science and helping.

Advice on recommended protein percentages in Hay

Shannon MacGillivray <shannon@...>

Hi

I'm having a tough time securing low sugar hay, our local supplier ran out due to delays from the forest fires in Washington State, I'm on Vancouver Island.  Every time I switch hay (even to a comparable analysis & with a slow transition) it causes a flareup, puffy coronet bands, warm feet, tender soles...  I've just found a local supplier of local hay with great ESC + Starch numbers who has larger quantities and will store for me so I can finally get a mineral balancing done as well.  However, the lowest protein in the various low sugar hays she has is 12.84 and they go up from there, that particular cut is Starch 1.88 and ESC 6.80.  So, is 12.84 ok for the Dry Matter crude protein percentage or is it too high?  I've been feeding lower, closer to 10...

My case file is outdated, just updating now and will upload with images of feet, and latest xrays.  My vet said that she's got about 3-4 mares in her practice that are having a hard time with getting their insulin numbers lowered as my mare is though I'm feeding her very carefully and according to ECIR recommendations.  Last insulin reading was 232 (she started at 286, went down to 203 then 232) this was fairly soon after an accidental hay change...

Thank you!

Pat - what hay ball did you get? I'm constantly looking for new ways of feeding that will slow down, entertain, and be safe.

My Canadian also eats like this. When I had her on self board, I doubled one inch hay nets - she could still empty them in 1-1.5 hours. I recently bought a hay ball which holds about 5-6 pounds. It slows her down a little.
