Re: Audi- Recommendations Ahead of Vet Visit?

Congratulations on the ACTH of 31. I know that’s not perfect, but it’s pretty good. You must be pleased.

Re: testing pellets
-- Thanks for the reply. I think i must be having a miscommunication, because I don’t remember ever mentioning using teff pellets instead of Timothy? So could you remind me of the change over to teff? Is that something you’re suggesting ? Thanks LJ Friedman Nov 2014 Vista, Northern San Diego, CA Jesse and majestic ‘s Case History

Michele Goldberg <ladipus@...>
Hi ..I had been feeding the ODTBC but with my newest bag that I opend my horse didn’t want to eat them for some reason?? So I happened to have Timothy pellets on hand and he’s eating them no problem ...I give 1/2 lb (measured in one of those feed measuring cups) to carry his Vermont Blend, Flax, & Vitamin E.

Re: testing pellets
The Standlee won't be any more consistent batch to batch than Mt Sunrise but because they are Teff instead of Timothy they are more likely (but not guaranteed) to be on the low end for sugar and starch. You're still better off with the OD Cubes for both horses.

Re: testing pellets
Thank you for replying about Standlee When I askbthe barn owner to use only standlee pellets for their consistency, what can I tell her that makes ita better choice than Mt. sunrise or some of the other brands? I ask because Majestic gets almost 10 pounds of Timothy pellets in addition to his hay so I would like that to be consistent even if I switch Jesse over to the balance cubes. If the cubes don’t work because of quidding etc. I would like to exclusively get the Standlee pellets but would prefer some data to back up my request to bo for standlee only with a reason to use stsndlee as only supplier thanks

It doesn't have to be hot; only suggested that because it works more quickly.

Re: od balance cubes
Purina did not buy TC. They are a distributor for TC and make some of their products (but not the cubes). Jesse needs to have the cubes soaked, or at least pour hot water over them before feeding.

Re: od balance cubes
An update. It seems that Purina now purchased Triple Crown. Because of this, they will offer some sort a free trial for the products. For example a purina rep can come to my barn offer me a free trial of the cubes and move forward with that? Interestingly, it is .40 cents cheaper per day to use the balance cubes comparing that to Timothy pellets plus my ukulele custom supplements. Like I said, I do believe that jesse did not like these od cubes and quidded them as well, but I believe I’ll have the rep come out and keep you all posted.
if the rep coming to the barn interest you, I believe you call your Feed Store and ask if they are authorized Purina dealer. I believe that’s what’s required to get this done. Can someone offer a suggestion on how to transition over if I was to make the switch? Thank you -- LJ Friedman Nov 2014 Vista, Northern San Diego, CA Jesse and majestic ‘s Case History

Re: OT - Tis The Season Course Sale
Barbara Rosensteel
I took NRC Plus and Nutrition as Therapy many years ago (e.g. 2010). Can I take a refresher of these two courses for a discount? And then select two other for my BOGO? I have saved all of the chapters and accompanying materials from both of these courses on my computer, so I can re-read them any time. Have there been significant revisions over the last 10 years in either of these courses? I hope to be the proud owner of a new horse (after 10 years without one) sometime soon and i want to get up to speed on nutrition and feeding for the non-IR, non-Cushings horse before I get him or her. Thanks, Barbara Rosensteel

Mad Barn Amino Trace side effects
Clare Summers
I’m looking for advice, or wondering if anyone else has run into issues with using the Amino Trace supplement?
My mare has been on it for 3-4 months now, and since I have been feeding her the recommended amount of x1 scoop per feed, twice a day, she has very liquid diarrhea (as well as formed stools), lots of gas, and can seem quite uncomfortable. Obviously these are lots of red flags, so I have halved the amount that she gets now, but she still has some side effects. Has anyone else had these issues while feeding this? It is definitely this specific feed that is causing the issues, and I have also contacted Mad Barn for advice. I’d love to hear from anyone who has had this experience or has suggestions for managing this. I’d rather not try and find another supplement to feed.... Thanks, Clare -- Clare in NS, Canada 2020 Cory; IR/EMS 2000 ASB mare

Advice on New Blood Work, Please
lindsaykrauland@...
I received the interim report for Audi’s new blood work from Cornell:
ACTH 31.1 pg/ml Insulin 5.39 uIU/ml Leptin pending Audi has been on 3mg CP since 9/18 and has continued to be symptomatic. Since we’re coming out of the seasonal rise now, should I increase his pergolide or hold at 3mg and see what happens? His prior blood work was from 7/28. His ACTH was 33.7 at that time, and he was on 1mg pergolide. So, he’s had a really modest decrease in ACTH since then, despite now being on 3X more medication. What are you thoughts on this? Is it most likely due to the rise? Finally, what do you make of his insulin? He did have hay overnight and a small amount left in his feeder in the morning when I went to draw the blood, but I’m wondering if maybe he hadn’t actually eaten for a few hours? -- Lindsay in TX 2020 Audi Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Lindsay%20and%20Audi Audi Photo Album: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=248156

Re: Hay Analysis, new lab work and Pergolide Veil?
Thanks Kirsten. I would happily try APF but did I read somewhere that it contraindicates with Jiaogulan? Also, do you think that I shouldn't exercise her while she's under the veil?

od balance cubes
When I first joined this group, I started on the OD balance cubes. Jesse quidded those cubes. So I’m thinking this is not a possible replacement. doing an analysis of cubes versus Timothy pellets plus custom supplements that cost me three dollars per day, I’m thinking the cubes are probably less expensive? But like I said, I don’t think cubes will work for jesse???
the cubes are not pellets . thoughts? thanks -- LJ Friedman Nov 2014 Vista, Northern San Diego, CA Jesse and majestic ‘s Case History

question on metformin
Kim de Wildt <Kdewildt9@...>
Dear all, Gismo is on Metformin for 3 months now and he is doing really good: he seems painfree, cantors and plays and can stand all day long. I wanted to ask for how long I should give him this. The rest of his life? Could I reduce the number of pills I am giving him in the long run? I would really appreciate some advice/experiences in this regard.
Kindest regards, Kim -- Kim de Wildt April 2019, Germany https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Kim%20and%20Gismo https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=89870

Re: Hay Analysis, new lab work and Pergolide Veil?
Hi Anne, it's great to see Tricana is in the "compensated IR" range! Not so great to see how high her ACTH is though, it's off the charts.
She is probably experiencing the pergolide veil and will be lethargic for a few days to a week or so. It does pass. Her daily jiaogulan might be helping. I'm assuming you are titrating her up to the usual starting dose of 1mg and that she is still eating her hay. My thoughts are that you might as well get through the veil as fast as possible, so I would hold off working her and keep going with the dose increases every few days -- unless her veil worsens to the point where she goes off her hay. Just my thoughts though... I know many people here have had the patience to titrate up slowly, and maybe you are one of them, but that really prolongs the veil for both of you, even if it does make it less severe (although I do agree that some horses with extreme veils clearly need very slow titration and APF). Have you tried giving APF? I know it's hard to get APF in Canada but Auburn Labs will ship it directly to you if you call them. -- Kirsten and Shaku (IR) - 2019 Kitimat, BC, Canada ECIR Group Moderator Shaku's Photo Album
