Re: Update on Cadet, slow/partial response to Invokana

Thanks Dr. Kellon! I will try to check his urine again to see if the glucosuria has increased. When would you suggest I check his insulin again?
Did you have any comments on the triglycerides monitoring? It is not typically included in equine profiles at Idexx, although easy enough to add on. By the way, the paired insulin from Idexx was 38.2 uIU/mL (range 4.5-20.0 uIU/mL). Re: testing pellets
-thank you for your replies. Just a recap, at a minimum you are suggesting to switch over to teff pellets for both horses. Preferred the balance cubes for both horses and additionally how would you supplement manage a horse eating timothy hay and balanced cube? I would still need a supplement Custom for the hay?- thinking hay and teff pellets plus a custom supplement is almost as good as hay, balanced cubes and a custom supplement for the hay? i could send in analysis of tim hay and teff pellets to get the correct formulas? I do appreciate all these answers. I have been quite neglectful in my balancing for the past few years . So I would like to get the correct spot on and tight. Re: testing pellets
Yes, but your custom only matches the hay analysis, not the pellets.

Re: uckele custom supplements and free bslancing??
Just for a little history, Uckele has been supportive of this group since the very early days. They were the first to offer custom supplementation - not because it made money (it doesn't) but because it was needed - and have consistently worked to meet the needs of horses with metabolic issues, dating back to before the time when most vets even acknowledged that IR/EMS existed. There is a section of their web site devoted to listing products safe to use for horses with metabolic issues. Their dedication and integrity is why I joined them after almost 2 decades with an equine "consumer affairs" type publication. Off soapbox.

Re: testing pellets
Ontario Dehy Timothy pellets.
Just timothy, no minerals or beet pulp. I just mentioned them in case budget is of concern, because they are less expensive than the ODTBC. Not sure how they compare in price to what you have been feeding. -- Lorna in Eastern Ontario

Re: testing pellets
When I feed Timothy hayvand Timothy pellets I do use the custom supplement for the complete amount of hay and pellets he is eating for the day.

Re: testing pellets
thank you for your question. There was a time when Majestic was leaving over 20 to 25% of the Timothy hay because it was so so quality so I added the pellets to make up for that. I’ve always used 4 pounds of pellets to mix the supplements in and additional 6 pounds was to offset the hay he was leaving over. Now that he has improved because the mixing Orchard with the Timothy, but he still gets those pellets and his weight is fine.

Re: vit e,
Caroline
I use Equimins vitamin E oil, it works out way cheaper than the human capsules - although they are clean and convenient. I mix 20g into 10 days worth of linseed then it's easy to dose accurately - otherwise it's very sticky and almost impossible to measure accurately!
Progressive Earth and Forage plus do vit E in silica - easy t dose but you'd need to add oil -- Caroline Spalding, Lincolnshire, UK September 2019 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Caroline%20and%20Evan https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=231916

High Iron
Help! For the first time I have to deal with hay that tested 701ppm, or 318 mg/lb.
I put a request for Dr. Kellon to help balance my hay. This hay came from same field as 1st cut. That came in at 70ppm. It is a lot more dusty and dirty so I am hoping shaking and rinsing will help. I am going to call equi lab for a retest, as my samples did not contain dirt. Any suggestions will be appreciated. -- Lori Able & Bodie 2016

Re: testing pellets
The hays and beet pulp going into ODTB cubes are always below 10% - usually well below.

Re: testing pellets
The amount of custom supplement you feed should be linked to how much hay he is eating. If you are feeding 10 lbs of timothy pellets, those should be balanced to their analysis as well or his diet is not balanced.

Re: Mad Barn Amino Trace side effects
Rhonda Turley
My Scooter has been on the AminoTrace+ since June 10, 2020. I also have him on on Mad Barn Probiotic, Mad Barn Vitamin E, Ground flax seed, and salt. He is 14 now and I bought him as an unbroken 3 year old and he has always been in the same stall in the same barn. It is a large boarding barn. He has always had a problem with soft stools and a touch of gas when the weather changes. I have had him on a probiotic since he was 3 years old. I did note that when i went to look at him at his breeders, his tail had lots of dried poop stuck to it so he may have this problem since before i bought him. I have not seen any side effects from any of the Mad Barn products so far. Getting him to eat his supplements and Prascend, has been challenging for the barn staff in the beginning but we have worked out a system that works.

Re: testing pellets
ODT = Ontario Dehy Timothy pellets. These are not mineral balanced, just another source of a plain timothy hay pellet.
