Re: Triple Crown Timothy Hay Cubes as complete diet
Thank you for asking this, Suzy, and Sherry for having the answer. We had a few horses that needed some additional weight last spring and I put them on the balanced cubes at an appropriate weight had they been hay. They fattened up really quickly and kept on gaining and now I know why. We quickly adjusted the cubes downward again and they’re in good shape now. I now recall reading about the 3:4 ratio at some point in the past, before it seemed important to me.

Re: Triple Crown Timothy Hay Cubes as complete diet
Hi, Chenelle. The balanced ODTBC have more calories than safe hay compared pound to pound. Therefore if you match hay to ODTBC pound for pound, you will be feeding too many calories.

Re: PPID with or without IR
Sherry Morse
Hi Joy, You may want to re-read the information on our website: https://www.ecirhorse.org/ as well as your original welcome message: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/topic/welcome_joy_and_emmy/29943408?p=,,,20,0,0,0::recentpostdate%2Fsticky,,,20,2,0,29943408. PPID and IR are separate issues but they do share some overlapping symptoms. Just because a horse has PPID does not mean that it will automatically have IR and similarly, not every IR horse will develop PPID. The diet we recommend for IR horses will benefit most horses, regardless of whether or not they have PPID as well.

PPID with or without IR
Joy
Hello all,
I've only been at this for a couple years and have a few questions. Just wondering if PPID and IR automatically go hand in hand or if there are some horses with PPID who don't have or won't develope IR. If my horse has PPID, but not IR, what are the chances IR will develop? Also, are there certain dietary requirements specific to IR, but not PPID, or do both conditions benefit from the same diet. Thanks for your help. Joy -- Joy and Emmy WI, Feb 2019 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Joy%20and%20Emmy

Re: Triple Crown Timothy Hay Cubes as complete diet
Hi Chemelle,
Aurelio and Dr. K are the ones to answer this really. But if you are talking about the ODTBC (Timothy Balance Cubes, not to be confused with just Timothy Cubes),they are not just hay. They have minerals, beet pulp added to them. I imagine that's why., but am open to correction. -- Lorna in Eastern Ontario

Sherry Morse
Hi Suzy, Are you referring to the post to Marsha with regard to Buzzy? You would need to continue to add salt, vitamin E and flax, however you wouldn't need to worry about phosphorus, manganese, magnesium, selenium, calcium, zinc, iodine, and copper.

Suzy Berkowitz
Thanks Sherry. So I don’t need to add any supplements to the cubes. There was a post earlier where someone said salt and another ingredient( I can’t remember what it was) should be added to the cubes if I was to make it the sole diet. Thanks

I could not find the info. Is invokana available in Canada? My vet never heard of this.
I have stop integri-t and cocosoya. The only thing he liked. So discouraging. I guess I can also stop Metformin at this point. Insulin keeps going up anyway. Poor little guy. -- Francine & Magic in Quebec Nov 2020 Was a member 10 yrs ago with Shamy

Giving Prascend and Invokana together
Can Prascend and Invokana be given at the same meal or is it preferable for one medication to be given in the morning and one in the afternoon/evening?

Re: Jherb and pulses question
Nnot in my experience. My pulse-y mare who has always been on J-herb to encourage hoof growth has detectable pulses in front always, never behind. My non-pulse-y mare had detectable pulses on J-herb only a few times for a few days and each time, there was a reason (abscess, flare of DSLD-like dropped fetlocks).

Re: Triple Crown Timothy Hay Cubes as complete diet
Sherry Morse
Hi Suzy, To be clear, it's the Ontrario Dehy Timothy Balance Cubes (ODTBC) which are sold in the US under the Triple Crown label as "Triple Crown Naturals Timothy Balance Cubes" that can be used in place of hay without needing extra minerals as each bag is balanced appropriately. Having said that, as per Aurelio, the replacement value is 3:4 so for every 4lbs of hay you would use 3lbs of cubes instead:

Re: Mare swollen like a balloon
My feed store does sell Triple Crown, but not the balance cubes. Those are a special order thing because they aren't a big seller here, according to the owner. She sells TC Senior and TC Complete and that's all she carries on the shelf. Everything else needs to be ordered. They also carry Standlee, but I had to order the Teff pellets as they only carry alfalfa and alfalfa blends.

Re: Testing for high Iron
Also see Dr Kellon's 2013 NO Laminitis! Conference presentation on Iron Overload. Download is free.
https://www.ecirhorse.org/proceedings-2013.php Dr Kellon will be presenting new information from her paper with Dr. Gustafson, at the conference in August 2021. I was present with my farrier for a wonderful gelding who under went blood loss through surgery significant enough to reduce his iron overload status. His insulin was dramatically reduced, but only temporarily. As he recovered, I believe his iron status went up again as well, but I'd have to check that. In every conversation I have been part of on this topic with Dr Kellon, the key, and the starting point for insulin control, is diet. Same for iron overload. Exercise when possible. We now have drugs that can be used if needed. -- Nancy C in NH ECIR Moderator 2003 ECIR Group Inc. President/Treasurer 2020-2021 Join us at the 2021 NO Laminitis! Jherb and pulses question
If Jherb increases circulation in the feet, would it be logical to conclude that it could also increase pulses in the feet?
