Re: Case History
Hmm. It seems as though you registered into the Case History subgroup using this email address
but you belong to the main group with two different email addresses the above one as well as deborah_ide@... I’m wondering if perhaps you are using the wrong one to log into the subgroup? I did a fair amount of cutting and pasting here and my text changed character once I did that. I have no idea how this will post. -- Martha in Vermont

Too Thin and Weepy Eyes
Stacey Smith-Bohn
Since foundering in February we have come a long way with the support of this group. Last week we had the vet and farrier out for trim, X-rays and blood work. Both the vet and farrier were very positive about how Terry looks and moves. He is turned out on a dry lot a good part of the day and continues to wear his Clouds when outside of his stall because the ground is hard and his soles are still on the thin side but improving. He moves beautifully and is comfortable and sound, but not ready to be put to work just yet.
The vet's concern is that Terry is still on the thin side with ribs visible and hips still a bit pronounced, and winter just around the corner. I have gradually increased his hay (soaked 1st cut Timothy) up to 22 lbs. a day with no change in appearance but a happier horse the extra hay. I recently read on here that increasing protein could help him put some weight on and before this founder/laminitis he was of Purina Enrich Plus which about 3 years ago was increased to 6 cups a day to improve his topline, so the protein did help in that instance. If I wanted to try to increase his protein what would be a safe choice and manor to do so? I hope to have the results of his latest ACTH and Insulin/Glucose very soon. Also, this time of year Terry gets weepy eyed (which also started about 3 years ago) and my prior vet told me to give him 10 Zyrtec (Cetirizine) twice a day. Is this drug safe to use for PPID/IR horse? Thanks in advance for you help. -- Stacey Smith-Bohn, New Jersey, 2021 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Stacey%20and%20Terry https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=261301

Is there a safe magnesium supplement I can feed my boy? I had heard magrestore was good but wanted to check.

OK, I am signed in. I see that I was signed in before but I tried logging out and back in again and I still cannot access the CH. I do not see anywhere showing that I am a member of the Case History group although I have updated her CH a number of times. I can get to the CaseHistory@ECIR.groups.io page but no farther.-- Deborah November 2012 Middle Tennessee Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Deborah%20and%20Tara

Hi, Candice,
It is hard to get Uckele products on Canada. Also, there is still the Covid issue. Not sure about Chewy. I have my doubts, but I will look into it. Thanks! -- Kathy 2017 and Donna Harrowsmith, Ontario https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Kathy%20and%20Donna

Hi, Jean,
I have tried beeti bites. They were a success in the beginning , now she will not eat them. I have half a bag in the feed room. Maybe I will give them another try. Thanks! -- Kathy 2017 and Donna Harrowsmith, Ontario https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Kathy%20and%20Donna

Maybe I am not signed in,m(I thought that I was) because clicking on the connection to Tara's CH in my signature does not open her CH and hay analysis. Re: Blood work and discouraged Insulin remains high
Good question about the 4 days! As often happens, the answer is - not sure. Metabolic adaptations in muscle generally persist for about a month after exercise starts but the "glucose hunger" that muscle has after exercise, which does not require insulin, is gone by about 24 hours. I guess the answer is it might have had an effect but I don't know how much. I can tell you that when IR horses suddenly stop exercise they can become actively laminitic within 2 to 4 weeks.

Re: Horse Now Too Thin
HI Anne,
Is your case history up to date? His lab results are still not in an ideal range, and this might be part of the issue. Its best if the ACTH numbers are in the low teens for some horses, and your horse's last test results show it in the 40s on 1mg of pergolide. You might need to increase the pergolide, which might bring down his insulin. When was the last time you had bloodwork done? Can you update your case history? I see the hay analysis you posted- is this the grass hay you are feeding? I agree with Nancy that you need to be feeding more forage first before anything else. You can get a fish scale for fairly cheap and weigh a hay net empty, and then add hay to get the correct measurement of what your horse is eating. -- Candice Piraino Primary Response Team September 2018, Summerfield, FL Shark's Photo Album

Re: Having difficulty controlling IR in pony
HI Julia,
I know it must be very frustrating for you! So I have had great luck, as well as numerous clients of mine, with the ThinLine Muzzle. This muzzle comes in different sizes and my clients who have them have donkeys, ponies and horses that wear it with great success. It is a little pricey, but well worth the money. It always for more airflow, but does restrict grazing. No, I do not receive any compensation for the product, but just have had vast experience in many different types of muzzles. Also, it will be in your horse's best interest if they have no access to grass at all- if that is an option for you. If you are in a boarding circumstance, this can be difficult. If your horses are in your backyard, then I highly recommend you look into a track system. It's fabulous and has many benefits! It can be as small or large as you like, and be extravagant as your imagination can come up with. I have been successful rehabbing not only my own metabolic herd, but clients' horses on the track system I created on my farm. It is the best investment I have made hands down. -- Candice Piraino Primary Response Team September 2018, Summerfield, FL Shark's Photo Album

Re: Thyro-L
HI Rita- yes definitely want to wean slowly, since it does mess with the thyroid some and it can backfire if stopped abruptly. If your vet gives you a little bit of backlash about it, maybe just tell them you want to continue it to get more weight off and then taper down with the new container.I don't think a vet would have issues providing more Thyro-L.

Re: Saraphina IR
HI Cyndi!
I can attest for using both APF and J-herb from my Best horse. BOTH are fabulous in my opinion- so whichever you chose that would be a great benefit for your horse. I used APF on my gelding when he foundered a few years ago, and when he first started pergolide. And I currently have him on jherb now and he has been on j-herb for almost a year consistently. It has a lot of benefits, which is why i continue to feed it daily to him. Also, I wanted to add that I have personally met and spoken to Philip Himanka, and he is a very nice guy and he is very well educated in podiatry care. If you have the chance to get him to come look at your horse, I would HIGHLY recommend you do so. He could be a great resource for you. If he doesn't get out your way, he could also maybe provide you with another contact to help you with hoofcare. -- Candice Piraino Primary Response Team September 2018, Summerfield, FL Shark's Photo Album

Re: Frog supports
Lavinia Fiscaletti
Hi Duane,
Poor boy, sorry he's so uncomfortable. Agree with everything Kirsten, Sherry and Trisha have already said. If he's not comfortable with the frog supports, please get them taken off. The March 20210 rads showed a trim that was compounding all his foot issues and that those issues had been present since at least May 2016, based on the older rads. Shoes and frog supports don't fix crumbly feet and sinking - diet adjustments and proper trims do. Sorry, but without current hoof photos, I can't be more specific. -- Lavinia, George Too, Calvin (PPID) and Dinky (PPID/IR) Nappi, George and Dante Over the Bridge Jan 05, RI Moderator ECIR

Re: Apple as Pergolide carrier
Hi Kathy, Yes its always best to make sure your horse is getting its medicine :) Sometimes we have to choose our battles, am I right?!
I also wanted to let you know that Uckele has these great nugget treats that are in fact LOW in starch and sugar. I have been giving a couple of these with the pergolide capsules I give 2 of my horses with great success. The treats come in 4 different flavors to choose from. I believe you should be able to get them in Canada. Also, Chewy carries them as well (also not sure if you can get deliveries from Chewy in Canada...?). If you buy from Uckele, you can also use your ECIR discount too. https://uckele.com/horse/ecir-friendly-products/ecir-treats-flavorings.html -- Candice Piraino Primary Response Team September 2018, Summerfield, FL Shark's Photo Album

Re: Frog supports
Hi Duane,
Just a quick message to tell you that in my experience, crumbly feet are most likely a diet that isn't working for a particular horse. When we see your case history, we can gather more information about the Big Picture and provide you with more customized advice for both you and Monty. Please upload the case history at your earliest convenience so we can get back to you and help you further. In the meantime, I would definitely try to stick with the diet protocol of the emergency diet and see if that helps Monty any. -- Candice Piraino Primary Response Team September 2018, Summerfield, FL Shark's Photo Album
