What now....help please

nikkibob1994@...

Darby is still incredibly sore. This has been going on for a month. In the morning he can hardly move, after some NSAIDS he is better, ready to be booted up and turned out. I tried going without the NSAIDS for a couple days and he was absolutely miserable. His latest blood results are in his file nothing remarkable except his calcium is a little high and his conjugated bilirubin is low. He has been on metformin (15 tabs twice a day) for about 2 weeks, and prascend (1 tablet) for about a week. His blood glucose is 88, insulin is 32, and ACTH is 28.8.
The vet wants to block him out next week and is saying possibly navicular...but bilateral navicular acute onset??
Please, where do I go from here.

Re: Dental sedatives

Thanks for more Sherry,
I kind of hijacked or butted into this thread.  My mare isn't in foal and I have a couple weeks to research this now due to postponement.  It is the gel we  are planning to use, and I may have my latest blood reesults back before this happens which will help with saying horse is stable or not, as Dr Kellon said stable not lame horse should be okay.

Have uploaded an updated Case History for Dixie. There are still some blood results outstanding.  Hoof photos and fresh xrays will be uploaded early next week.  When I deleted the original Case History and replaced it with the new one should I have chosen to advise?

Shera-  It's a herb used in cooking.  I'm going to Safeway today to see if they have it, if not, I'll go to the Spice Shop in the Old Mill.  I'm going to try it on a friend's PPID pony.

You can also contact the pharmacy that it was dispensed from.  Mine says room temp away from light being mindful of the labelled expiration date.
Definitely cheaper!

Re: Dancer's Diet and Vet Response

Dancer's Mom

Dancer’s weight , right now is 990 and she definitely needs to loose weight.  Ideal weight is closer to 900  when I first got her, 4 years ago, she was about 945.

I’ve been giving her all those supplements for a while.  I just added the MegRestore last month.

And she’s had “lamenesses” and ulcers on and off for a while now.  At least since beginning of the year.  She’s an Easy  keeper appendix quarter horse.

when I increase her exercise, when she’s able, I increase her hay quantity. And I’ve also have had her on “ free feed” hay and had 50-70% Teff hay and 30-50% meadow hay.  And she’s always self regulated cuz she really doesn’t like Teff hay that much. Beginning of August, she was feeling sound and healthy so, I put her back on free feed at that time, and have always used some type of slow feeder, with her.

9/9/21 we started on thyroid powder 1 scoop per vet for weight loss and vet increased thyroid powder to 2 scoops on 9/22/21 to speed up weight loss, she said

Re: New body shots on Cadet, has he lost enough weight?

Sherry Morse

Hi Aunna,

Considering that he's 14.3 closer to 1000lbs is not something I'd be worried about; particularly since you've consistently had him at a body score of 6 or more at 1100lbs.  He looks good in the pictures, definitely not skinny.

I had been meaning to check the Ivermectin prices and your post reminded me, LJ...  Anyway, I usually get Durvet brand from Amazon and I paid $17.95 last November for a 3-pack and it is now $62.86 for the same 3-pack!!!  Good heavens!  Well, hopefully by next time I need to give it, the idiots of the world will have decided it isn't going to save them from Covid and the prices will come back down...

Re: Could someone tell me if the blood results could have been affected by sedative

Sherry Morse

Hi Carrie,

The short answer is yes, the results can be affected by sedation.

Re: Any updates on those using PEA?

Frances C

I'm still using PEA ultrmocronized, about 2500 mg  once a day along with devil's claw extract. It may work better in combination with herbals. Most human versions seem to contain some sort of herb. I had been giving 5000 mg until my Miss FussBudget decided she was no longer going to consume bucket feed. So it was back to square one with just a little soaked beet pulp, 2 oz flaxseed, the 2500 mg PEA mixed with 1 tablespoon hemp/evening primrose oil mix. I have been able to add back 1 oz. H.A. and 4 oz. alfalfa pellets. If she continues to consume the mix I may bump up the PEA. I take PEA myself with tumeric extract. Does it help me or my mare? I dunno, but I don't want to take the chance of her regressing if I take her off it.

Re: ivermectin price increase?

Sherry Morse

As I'm sure you've noticed ivermectin is now being labeled as not for human consumption and is out of stock in many places.  If you don't have a supply on hand you'll be paying more for quite a while now.  $9 is actually cheaper than it used to be.

Re: Dancer's Diet and Vet Response

Sherry Morse

So is Dancer's ideal weight 990 or closer to 900lbs?  If it's 900lbs she should be eating no more than 18lbs a day. It sounds like you're feeding her less which can have its own issues.

Was she on all of these supplements prior to her laminitis episode or have you started them all since she started showing signs of hoof pain?

Re: Non weight bearing

Lavinia Fiscaletti

This type of presentation is classic for an abscess, which do not always show up on rads. They can be far more painful than laminitis as well.

Re: Non weight bearing

dr.kellylear@...

Thank you for the suggestions. I will go get some Numotize and that. She doesn’t want to make at all right now, spending about 95% of the time laying down and won’t bear any weight on the left front.

Do some abscesses not show up on X-rays? It’s just weird how she went from walking fairly well to not wanting to get up at all so quickly.

ivermectin price increase?

Looks like my supplier of ivermectin at two dollars a tube has gone up to nine dollars a tube assuming because of Covid. Does anyone have a affordable source  for the ivermectin tubes we buy

Re: Rose Update, New Test Results

Cindy Giovanetti

She’s on a 90-day trial?  You’ve shared that you’re completely overwhelmed with her care, and she’s not fitting in with the rest of your herd.  Honestly, I’d return her.

Now, I’m not one bit tempted to be rid of my own high-needs horse; but he’s mine, and I love him, and we get along beautifully.  I have very much enjoyed learning how to care for him.

But a horse on a 90-day trial?  I’d think long and hard about that.

Re: New member My Mare Chicy in foal Dr Kellon Levenia

Qhgirl

Thank you Kristen
My friend Kim in this group came over (she lives in the next county so not a real short drive) and she shorten Chicy's toes to the white line.  Then my farrier came and shortened toes even more but he also rasped the periople above the toe to remove any change of direction if it still existed. The ex rays were taken before both trims. So if the 1" estimate is based upon the ex rays the lateral pictures I took yesterday would be her actual foot now. So I am wondering if the ex rays would be a 100% accurate guide. I do not see any dishes or change of direction in her New lateral pictures but again the farrier rasped any if they existed even though I strongly requested he not rasp the periople. What I do see is more toe possibly on the top part of the toe in both front feet. So thinking instead of going under her foot I should rasp off the top of the toe and the round it up to avoid going into or past the white line. Am I making sense or am I off base here. The white line to me is the area where I see a definite distinction between the hoof wall and the sole.

please correct me if I am misinterpreting anything. I do know once something needed is taken away I cannot put it back so need to be sure I do not take too much.

I have a friend coming tomorrow early am before she leaves for work to help me. I want to be confident I am doing what needs to be done and not too much.

Thank you so much. My girl is laying down a lot. I have pads taped on her feet.
