Re: A couple questions…

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

Patti,

Unless your horse has a problem there's no need to give probiotics. Equine Generator is fine for any horse.

Sand Clear is OK but IME loose powder works much better than pellets and you need to give enough - 2 cups volume measure, moistened. https://uckele.com/psyllium-husk-fiber-5lbs.html

EMS can cause all those signs except for the coat.  Early PPID cases may test with normal ACTH except during the seasonal rise. We are coming out of the rise now but elevations may persist into January. There's not much difference between now and November 5. If results are questionable, ask for a TRH stimulation test.

A couple questions…

Dancer's Mom

Which probiotic product is safe to give my horse?  Is it necessary to have Dancer on probiotics?  I’ve always had her on Equine Generator but that’s not good for her, with her laminitis and what’s going on with her, from my previous questions…

And, Is Sand Clear or another of that type of product ok to give Dancer, now?  She was diagnosed with Laminitis 9/13/2021…

Our new vet said Dancer has EMS and she’s IR, and she say she doesn’t have PPID. The last time Dancer’s had blood work is June 2021. Dancer does have a thick coat/ hard cresty neck, fat pockets above her eye lids, and over weight. Could those symptoms be from EMS? Can PPID show up, by now, since June 2021?   I hope that makes sense.  I’m having such a hard time with new vet getting Dancer’s blood work before November 5th. She insists, it’s been too soon, for getting blood work (ACTH/Insulin/Glucose) before that time.    I’m wondering if I should get another vet, who will run the blood work now, instead of waiting longer for this vet to run blood work on 11/5?

Thanks in advance for your help.  I really appreciate this group.  I need to find more time to enter my info and read up on stuff, here…

Re: New and pretty lost

Diane - Just another thing...from my personal experience, and the experience of many here. For years when my vet did regular blood panels, I was told everything was normal. But it wasn't. Even if numbers fall within *normal* ranges...you really have to use the IR Calculator to see what the results really mean:
https://www.ecirhorse.org/EMS-calculator.php

Your horse's ACTH and Insulin numbers are very high (assuming normal ranges that people here usually work with) so the fact that your vet said your horse is borderline is just wrong. The unfortunate truth is that even a great vet can have only a general knowledge of what causes PPID, I/R, etc. and they do not have the experience that this group has. It was very hard for me to wrap my head around that with the vet I used many years ago, because he was/is wonderful. But many people have been put in the position of having to educate their vets and I guarantee you will not be steered wrong here.

She was still in stall when she started Prascend. She just got out of stall for first time earlier this week on Oct 20, the date I started this post.

I spend a lot of time sitting in the shavings all over her stall to rasp her feet and put boots on and off so no insects. The cv only thing I did yesterday was put some natural fly spray on her - the kind that smells like peppermint. It is a brand I do not use as they were out of the brand I like. This is the first time I have ever used it. But it is the only I did different. This would not explain the first break out.

Makendra Silverman - NS

Wow, thank you so much Lavinia. I learned a lot from your email and will contact a hay balancer from the link you sent. Good to know about the NIR vs. wet chem and I will continue doing the #603 for hay tests I send in.
Just want to get an appropriate hay for my crew and dial in the mineral balancing to that.

Appreciate your time and expertise on this! Hope to be able to share good results in the coming months with the ECIR community.
All best,
Makendra

All Tractor Supply stores have home delivery. I think it's free above a $49 purchase but not positive on those details.

You could reduce the additional methionine to 2500 (one tsp) for a total of 5000 which is still on the conservative side. Many areas around the globe are experiencing a drop in soil sulfur related to pollution control and are not yet adjusting for this with sulfur in the fertilizer.

Thanks for the information about the peas. The flax and soy protein sounds doable. Would she need extra methionine with 2500 mgs already in Hoof Complex?

I'll work on getting PQ pellets ordered too.

Thanks much!

So happy for you both that all your hard work and dedication has done so much for him, and as usual a wonderful example of how these horses can come back. I would encourage any members that get discouraged to follow Vinnie’s journey ❤️

Hi Patty,
Where I use to live in No Cal I could buy my Triple Crown Timothy Balance cubes at Tractor Supply. All Triple Crown products are cheaper there than my feed stores. Now I live in San Diego and my local Tractor Supply doesn’t carry them and it would be a special order. I may do eventually but there is the added pain of the trip and loading and unloading. Maybe Tractor Supply near you carries the cubes or you can order.

Re: Iron

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

ALL hay contains iron. It's an essential nutrient for the plant. If you don't see it on the hay analysis you probably didn't ask for trace minerals.
