Thank you so much. I’m still having a hard time wrapping my mind around it. I’m pretty confused. There is so much to learn. I bought a good set of clippers today. Then, I worried because we will have our first cool night tomorrow. I only clipped her neck and chest. But, with her going no sweater I have to hose her every hot day. The long hair stays damp😑 She’s likely to get sick being damp all the time ugh. I’m mad at myself for missing the signs. She’s was sweating Like crazy, drinking a lot and super itchy. All things I had no idea were signs. I’m already learning so much here. Thanks to this group I put her back on the Prascend. I’ll try 1/4 tablet daily and see.Sent from my iPhone

-- AnnG from Pa 2021 i have a teenaged TWH gelding who has been lame with swelling in the right fore. His lameness has had remissions and exacerbations since March, 2021 with a split hoof,& abscess blowout in April. Spring vet visit in April, and barely lame. Still lame in May w/ vet eval, X-rays suggesting laminitis. Had been turned out in a grazing muzzle since April. Confined to a dry lot,& on well solve feed w/1.5-2% body wt,& hay in a slow feed Hay-net. When sound, controlled exercise started and slowly increasing muzzled turnout. Shoes pulled, and feet trimmed per protocol. Has had ups and downs several times since. Wt down 180lbs, and still losing. What is the expected timeline for this,& what am I missing??

I saw this advertised on Horse.com. I'm a little (or a lot) suspect. I'm sure most of you have already seen the advertisement, but I thought I'd pass it along.
Abby Keegan, MS, PAS, an equine nutritionist for Cargill North America, will present considerations for designing appropriate diets for horses with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and how newly FDA-approved chromium might be beneficial. She’ll also share real-world example diets. Sponsored by Nutrena.

We are having testing done tomorrow at 1:30 pm EST. I know to give only hay tomorrow, but should I withhold timothy pellets and supplements at dinner time (4 pm EST) tonight?

I thought I placed this topic yesterday but I don't see it this morning. Anyway, I need to add an antihistamine, hydroxyzine, 2x/day, to Midnight's medications list. I give her the first dose in the morning, she gets her supplements in the afternoon and then I have been giving her the pergolide at 5/p when I feed. I would like to give her the 2nd dose of hydroxyzine at 5/p also but wonder if this will interfere with the pergolide. -- Linda in CA 2020 Midnight and Ostara https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Linda%20Midnight%20OStara

Re: Seeking help selecting hay options, or buy both and mix?
If you don't want to be soaking all winter go with the 2nd one.

Seeking help selecting hay options, or buy both and mix?
Hi, I have the opportunity to bring Ero home where he'll have permanent in/out turnout on a dry lot, and likely reduced workload through winter (no indoor, no heated barn).
I have a hay source with two hay options (both large squares) and I'm seeking advice on which may be better before I buy, but need to do it this week.
Note: These values are via wet chem and I plan to run a full 603 test once I select the hay so that I can properly balance it. Only had .jpg images so I put these into my photo folder here: Hay Options. Brief details below (if images are fuzzy):
Large Bale Grassy Mix (As Sampled): might need to be soaked (but soaking will be much more challenging this winter) % Moisture -10.6 % Dry Matter - 89.4 % Protein - 12.4 % ESC - 9.7 % Starch - 1.2 Iron - 158 ppm
Large Bale Canary/Marsh Grass (As Sampled) - some horses won't eat this, but Ero has high leptin/food drive and ate the dry sample. % Moisture -7.0 % Dry Matter - 93.0 % Protein - 9.9 % ESC - 5.6 % Starch - 1.5 Iron - 117 ppm
Which is a better choice for Ero? I could purchase either, or buy both and mix. Thanks for any suggestion/advice!

Patti, Unless your horse has a problem there's no need to give probiotics. Equine Generator is fine for any horse. Sand Clear is OK but IME loose powder works much better than pellets and you need to give enough - 2 cups volume measure, moistened. https://uckele.com/psyllium-husk-fiber-5lbs.html EMS can cause all those signs except for the coat. Early PPID cases may test with normal ACTH except during the seasonal rise. We are coming out of the rise now but elevations may persist into January. There's not much difference between now and November 5. If results are questionable, ask for a TRH stimulation test. -- Eleanor in PA
