Re: Whole Chia Seeds and Fecal Water Syndrome Now AniMed MuscleUP Powder

Gamma oryzanol is very poorly absorbed.  I once did a field trial of all equine GO products to check for muscle bulking. The only one that had any effect was Equiade's Body Builder.

Calming Supplement

Dancer's Mom

Dancer seems to be feeling good enough to start being more forward at our walks. Now, Dancer has had more frequent episodes where she crow hops and bucks in the small rolling pen (I do put front cloud boots on, when she’s out). The next day, from those episodes, she doesn’t want to walk cuz she’s probably sore, in the front. Is there any CBD supplement that could help Dancer be calmer?  Just let me know. Thank you so much.

As Lavinia points out, the particular hay analysis package you have doesn't reliably determine ESC+starch for equines with EMS. If the analysis is recent, you can contact Equi-Analytical to ask if the sample is still on hand in the lab. If so, the lab can add analyses for ESC and Starch by wet chemistry.  You need your sample number.
Email: https://equi-analytical.com/contact/
Phone: 1-877-819-4110

If ESC+Starch turns out to be safe, the mineral analysis you have is fine for balancing the diet.

Hi, Sally. The tiny amount of most active ingredients in an ounce make me skeptical of claims that AniMed Muscle-Up was responsible for a big improvement in anything. MadBarn has a handy online calculator that's instructive. Adjust the quantity from 1000 gram feeding rate to 29 grams (a generous ounce). https://madbarn.ca/feeds/muscle-up-animed/

One ingredient, Gamma oryzanol, was quite the nutraceutical darling, but I couldn't find anything definitive on Google Scholar. Dr Kellon will know if it has real potential.

Looks like the hay analysis is the #601 Equi-Tech, done via NIR testing. That means the ESC+starch values can be off by as much as 30% in either direction.

The hay analysis shows high calcium and manganese, so mineral balancing needs to provide extra phosphorus and magnesium, as well as added copper and zinc.

Hi Martha,

Yes, I’m just waiting for the Prascend to be delivered.

I had a feeling I may be overdoing the cubes and going over my daily requirements for him. I’ll definitely adjust!

The hay analysis was performed by Equi-Analytical.
I do not have a hay core, so I broke open 10 various bales and took a small sample from the middle of each one. I mixed those samples together and sent it off in the plastic bag that was provided in the kit.

Re: Allergies possible symptom of PPID?

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

All the cases I know of were chestnuts and chestnuts are notorious for having skin issues. I'm sure there's a connection in the genetics but no one knows what it is.

Angioedema in horses is usually described as diffuse, plaque-like swellings rather than mimicing hives but if you check the human descriptions you'll find it. I suspected it in the first horse from biopsy findings that showed a reaction in the deeper layers of the skin. That doesn't happen with hives. The prolonged course (months to years) is also suspicious for something other than run of the mill hives.

Yes, that´s a lot. To Spain is 45.50 € so even more. They say it can be sent by post "at your own risk". I don´t know if this means the product can be lost or maybe some fees.

I believe it is the first one.

Hi Dr Kellon,
Yes, my horse is a Chestnut. Interesting,  what is the connection?

And yes, the hives came back each time after the course of dexamethasone and the prednisolone.
I will research the angioedema and EMS,

Thank you so much,

Chronic hives may actually be angioedema. I have no idea how common that is but we had an Arabian with it on this list and I know of two others also. Low dose anabolic steroids once a month can treat it.

Is your horse a chestnut?

PPID changes the immune system so that it is more inflammatory. There is also some indirect evidence that EMS is associated with allergies, and that is  more likely at her age.

However, the corticosteroids should still resolve them - although they can come back when you stop. Is that what you meant?

Hi Bonnie,
I certainly noticed that my PPID gelding became more sensitive to things like tick bites when his ACTH became a bit elevated and I don’t think I’m alone here.  He also had other skin issues like pastern dermatitis which became much less apparent with increased pergolide.  His initial diagnosis came about when he was having recurrent ‘colics’ which were quickly relieved with cimetidine.  Once he started on pergolide, those painful episodes disappeared although I did occasionally treat him for ulcers when they became apparent through his choices of feed, most often in fall.

Allergies possible symptom of PPID?

Bonnie Eddy

I have a 13 year old Arab mare that has been plagued with chronic ulcers and has had seasonal allergies with hives for a couple of years now. This year starting in the fall, the hives have been really bad and have not been resolved even with dexamethazone, prednisolone, hydroxyzine, and currently finalizing an elimination diet.

Could increased sensitivity to allergens be a symptom of PPID? No other signs. She has become an easy keeper and possibly become IR although she is on an IR diet.
I've spent many thousands treating everything and will eventually test her but need to wait right now.

Thank you,

Re: Just diagnosed PPID

Thanks, Dawn!  Don’t forget to update your case history accordingly.  With effectively a pound of cubes plus 6 pounds of hay, you may well still be over feeding him.

Why are you waiting until next week to start Prascend?  Is it just a matter of availability?

I think we still need to know what test was used for the hay analysis.  Can you please tell us a little more about how the hay test got done?

Yes, the post TRH stim was high but that doesn’t always seem to dictate how much Prascend you will need to manage it.  Prascend dosing isn’t done by weight, although vets tend to start little guys on less Prascend.   A high ACTH after stimulation with normal before is often seen in the early stages of PPID.

Dr. Kellon...An interesting conversation started yesterday on the Horses with Fecal Water Facebook page when a member (Stevie Ann) posted there about her coincidental success with her horse's long time FWS when she supplements with one scoop of AniMed Muscle-Up powder per day https://https://valleyvet.cvpservice.com/product/view/basic/1077074/product/view/basic/1077074

One of the other members, Anita Wood, shared her Researchgate, net investigation in to several of the ingredients in this product with some interesting results that Members of that group can read in her comments to this original post.

I would very much appreciate your feedback on the ingredients in this product Dr. Kellon, and whether or not it could safely be fed at a scoop a day to an IR/Cushings horse as an experimental solution to ongoing FWS in horses with no known medical cause.  Thanks so much, Sally
