Hi Nancy,

Have you looked at the picky eater list in the files (https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/files/9b%20Pulling%20it%20Together/Picky%20Eaters%20Checklist.pdf)?  Tried a pinch of Laminox and then building up to the full dose?

Hi Nancy,

Just do a search of the message archives for "socks" and you'll get lots of ideas.

How to get Otter to eat Laminox?

Nancy Carlson

Otter will not touch his soaked beet pulp with Balancer pellets if I put Laminox in it. I need to up my game. Does anyone have experience in feeding this to picky horses?

Winter laminitis boot liner ideas?

Nancy Carlson

I am trying to keep Otter comfortable at night.

Does anyone have suggestions about how to line Cavello boots? I have gel pads on the way but need to put something over his feet to keep them warmer inside the boots. Large wool socks? Bits of fleece? I put standing wraps on last night for the first time and there was an improvement.

Back in 2017 long time member Abby Nemec put together the Pergolide Regulatory story for her blog:

REGULATORY DISCRETION: The story of the Great Pergolide Scare of 2007

Here's a post that introduced it.

https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/209453

i checked and the blog is still available. It is worth the time investment.

http://www.atimeforhorses.com/regulatorydiscretion/

You may hear this wonderful story via your subscription access of choice: Apple Podcasts | Android | Google Play | Stitcher | TuneIn | RSS

It is an investment of time (over an hour) but you will thoroughly understand much, much more about the need for pergolide, the best use for PPID horses, and the dedication of the members of the ECIR Group.

Dr. Kellon, thank you for clarifying the history. I thought I read about the high dose trials here, but it's possible I read it at another site. It was a long time ago.

Re: Fish scale for weighing hay??

Chris Hanson

Glad you found something that works for you Donna!
Because I soak my hay in slow feeder bags I started to use a handheld fish scale. It also works to measure the weight of buckets of Timothy cubes.
it rarely returns to 0 after a couple of uses—though there is a dial for that which works only a little. Still it seems pretty consistent and handy.
it doesn’t seem to work if you drop it, so I think I’m on my 5th one. But they’re less than 10 bucks and don’t need batteries.

I called Wedgewood again and asked for a pharmacist. They are going to call the vet and request change to oil so I do not have to refrigerate and is more stable.

Wish I had known the water tincture is unstable. I called Wedgewood and requested change to oil but they will not contact vet like s regular pharmacy. I have to get vet to call and my vet was unwilling to call. I have already ordered. Bummer.

I have a friend who owns a trucking company. Last week he posted how fuel is so high it costs them practically double in fuel and is continuing to go up. This is another reason why prices are increasing. Plus fewer truckers.

Hi Janet,

Just be aware that pergolide in water is notoriously unstable so that's why we don't recommend it here.

Re: Trailering to vet Dr Kellon Please

I went ahead and ordered to 3 mg water tincture. It is 3 mg per ml. I can give her .67 ml until her dosage is resolved.

I did not want the tincture in water. Mainly because it has to be refrigerated and costs a lot more that tincture in oil or capsules that do not need to be refrigerated.

Now I still need to continue her dose of 2 mg daily and can move up to 3 pending outcome from Rood and Riddle. Concerned if they will return my call based upon another thread in our group stating there pharmacy will not compound pergolide.

Based on my experience lately, not just with Wedgewood, but other companies, is they are facing supply chain issues and cost increases themselves. I also get the impression that they are facing staffing challenges as well. So sometimes when you call in you are getting someone with less training and/or experience. Or I think sometimes it is some sort of answering service which is fielding some of these calls, so they do fine with basic questions, but struggle with stuff that requires more know how.

That being said, the price increases, overall costs and the challenges in even trying to get a vet on board to work with you and think outside the "Prascend Box" can wear you down. In addition to the emotional struggle of trying to help your horse.

Re: Wedgewood Pergolide Quote

I agree we need to work with the tiny number of compounding pharmacies we have available to supply this critical medication to our horses. Cost of living increases are no doubt different in different parts of North America. In California we’re seeing large price increases in everything from feed to fuel to groceries to rents. Recent articles detail critical drug shortages and delays. So while I wish CP prices weren’t going up, I’m not shocked or offended, just saddened by the impact increases have on our community.

Re: Wedgewood Pergolide Quote

Dawn,

Your history is off a bit. Human doses are not 100 mg. Depending on the condition being treated a human dose is less than 1 mg to 5 mg. Permax or compounded pergolide has been in use in horses since the late 1970s. Prascend was FDA approved in the US in 2011. Their dosages were based on dosages commonly reported in the literature, which is up to 5 mg/day, the upper suggested dose in the EU. The hysteria in general is more related to human exposure than anything equine. There have been no court decisions addressing pergolide. There have been two federal district court decisions that declared animal compounding from bulk drug was outside the FDA's scope but they are only binding in those regions. Where I was active was after the 2007 banning of pergolide in the US. We petitioned to get a special allowance for pergolide compounding since Permax was banned. The FDA was very reluctant to do that, to put it mildly, and it was quite the battle but we won and they agreed to at least look the other way.

Re: Trailering to vet Dr Kellon Please

I sent an email on 2/4/22 to Whitney Mathes at Rood snd Riddle in KY. I followed up on 2/9. No reply. I called her on 2/15 and was told she was in emergency and would return my call. I still have not heard back. I am running out of Prascend so need to order something. My vet called in 3mg pergolide in apple flavored water when I asked for capsules. He said he does not have time to call R&R. Was upset I did not want 3 mg water tincture. So I am still waiting but cannot afford to run out of Prascend and the water tincture is much more expensive than oil or capsules at Wedgewood.  So I am stuck at this point just trying my best to take care of my almost 8 month in foal mare. She is doing quite well. Still has bulges above her eyes when she eats and for a while after. Her feet are growing and she walks barefoot all over her turnout. Her demeanor is alert and interested. Good appetite but picky about her hay. She does not feel as good as she did before all of this but I feel could be from being bred. She feels good enough to boss the geldings around snd lunge at them if they do not mind. She never bites or kicks. Just strong body language and energy.
