Feeding IR horses:

Dr. Frank is a member of this list.
Only thing I would disagree with is feeding fat. Fat feeding worsens
insulin

Re: Vit E: an easier way?
That's a good idea, but the barn where I board Penny has only cold water. I think asking the barn owner to bring hot water from her house just to melt the capsules for Penny would be more than she'd

25 to 30% of the diet, by weight, can be beet pulp. If you go too high
you can end up making them cut back on hay.
Figure 1 lb beet pulp (dry weight) = 2 lbs of hay
Figure out how much of each you

Hi, Sandra,
Thank you so much for your feedback and for that page about discerning whether a horse is too thin. That was VERY helpful. I suppose Angel is between a 3 and a 4, which is good. 1

Re: Vit E: an easier way? - thyroxine absorption
The only two things I know of (and just checked again) that will
interfere with thyroxine absorption are soy and calcium. Since calcium
is in everything, human dosing instructions call for taking it

No issues. If you're thinking about the 28.8 carbohydrate figure, note
that most of that is fiber.

Re: soy hulls vs beet pulp
Not easy to find soy hulls either, but they compare very favorably to
beet pulp, similar safety and calories, more balanced mineral profile.
In the drawback category is dusty.

You would have to have them tested to know for sure but oat hay pellets
can be too high in sugar and starch. Increasing her hay and beet pulp
would be safer - and switch her to ground stabilized flax
