I am not a vet , but have just dealt with abscesses with my pony and one of my non IR Arabs just recently
no antibiotics were needed with either horse, my pony was painfully lame for 5 days

The usual precaution is to avoid J herb within 24 to 48 hours of surgery...due to clotting time.
Based on Justin's previous sedations- your vet will know what drugs are appropriate. My vet

OT - dog cushings

You are right on all counts. Thyroid meds won't cure IR but may temporarily help to jump start a sluggish thyroid if the horse is overweight and thyroid numbers are lower due to primary
