No. The DE on soaked hay will be lower, sometimes much lower with low fiber hay. Dry a small soaked sample and have that retested with a short package like the basic (09) wet chemistry here

If you hold the syringe between your thumb and first finger, rest the side of your hand firmly against the horse's neck, the entry angle will be good. You want a 30 to 45 degree angle with the vein.

Rye tends to run very high S/S. One problem with mixed hays is that even if the mixture tests OK the horse will always tend to pick through it for the tastiest parts and leave the rest.
