Re: IR and n/p1 mare
Hi Ani,
Great for getting your CH started, now here's what else we need:
Diamond's current weight, Diamond's ideal weight, dates of PSSM and all metabolic testing, and actual results for those tests.

Re: Metformin 30-60 min before feed?
I have always simply mixed the ground Metformin into my horse's feed with no problems. The first time he had insulin over 200 and it came right down. I just restarted Metformin again after an uptick

Re: Sparkles ...WAS Photos Mark up, NOW frogs/bruising ... Dr Kellon, Lavinia ... anyone
Hi Sherry.
If I said 275, that was a typo. It should have been 375lb (The picture of her in the stall Feb 2022 I measured).
She has always been right around 380 from the time I got her until now.

Re: Crest hardness - any relation to insulin levels/ risk of laminitis flare up?
That’s interesting.
my pony’s crest is very soft, but when we retested her insulin a couple of weeks ago the level was 1200 (she’s been on Metformin for a while, which was working but no longer

Hi Helene,
It's usually an elevation in insulin that correlates to an increase in the hardness in a crest. For an IR horse insulin over 80 is the point at which we consider them in danger of becoming

For Aussie members--Prascend online prescription
If you are in Australia and your vet is willing to write you a prescription to buy Prascend online, I recently ordered from "Pet Chemist Online" and was impressed with the service and prompt delivery.

Crest hardness - any relation to insulin levels/ risk of laminitis flare up?
My farrier has said that she’s found crest hardness (specifically when it gets hard) to be a good indicator for when a horse might be at risk for a flare up/ relapse of laminitis. Is there any truth

Re: IR and n/p1 mare
Just out of curiosity, I thought a horse with PSSM1 couldn’t also be IR? Or are there rare cases where a horse has both?

Thank you for all your help on this group!
I have 2 PPID horses, both on Prascend and just recently did the TRH Stim & EMS panel through Cornell.

Jen,
I certainly agree that grass will grow back no matter what you do.
Are you tracking how much your horses move?
