1) soaking hay - great job. Make sure you soak 1 hour room temperature water and drain the water well away from where the pony can get it.

The ones I buy are softwood pellets harvested in this region. I live in softwood country. Pine and spruce trees. No black walnut within hundreds of kilometres. I do NOT buy the bagged hardwood

As has been mentioned by others, the dry pellets are not stable underfoot. When dry they have a slick coating (natural tree lignin?) that holds them together. They are much more absorbent when prewet.
