"It does make sense that transdermal uptake would have more potent local effects than systemic ones."
And that is what I said - I personally use magnesium solution transdermally

Re: Adequate Iodine?
Inorganic iodine salts can lose iodine. Being refined has nothing to do with it. Loss from iodized salt is slow in sealed bags but exposure to air increases it.
No special risk for an IR horse.

The preference for soaked hay could mean she has oral irritation - mucosal ulcers, gingivitis, diastema. Salt, concentrated minerals, hard capsules, coarse foods would be irritating.
You could soak

I don't see E in her CH but assume she is probably getting(wink, wink, nod, nod) 2000iu ,or 5x400iu caps?

Lorna she has become very good at finding the vit E capsules and spits them out. My original post a few weeks ago was about her poor appetite for all her minerals and supplements. She gets them in 1/2

Thanks for the quick response Dr Kellon. So the insulin, glucose, ACTH and leptin tests will be a complete waste of money? If that's the case I will make sure the samples are not sent out on Monday,

Thanks Maria, so if 100% of the NRC value is enough then he is getting that for sure. No idea what is in my hay for iodine, but the 1 tbsp of salt covers the Na and Cl at maintenance and not sweating

Re: More fiber in manure
P.S. Feeding soy hulls or beet pulp would help, as would soaking the hay in just enough water that all the water is soaked up by the hay.

That would be more likely a sign of inefficient chewing. Older horses have reduced force of chewing even if their teeth do not look bad.

I think the major issue is the claim it is superior to oral supplements. Many other minerals also have documented uptake through the skin - iodine being the most familiar - but for whole body
