Re: My Pony has foundered
Hi Sandy,
POAs (and ponies in general) are prone to being IR as they are very thrifty. How tall is your pony? Is she at her ideal weight now or does she need to lose more weight to be a 4.5- 5 BCS?

while the future is hard to predict, there are lots of foundered horses with great outcomes. a friend's pony who I trimmed after she foundered several years ago, with x-rays showing 18 and 22 degrees

Ah, good to know about the insulin being pulled after feeding (one of the many reasons we say the devil is in the details). I would still want to recheck that after a proper feeding>bloodwork

I wanted to say that I did not put a lot of weight Maisie's ANTECH Insulin test being elevated at 49 uU/mL on March 17th, 2022, because her blood was taken

Wouldn’t it get moldy after it soaks and dries? Also what happens if it goes longer? More reduction, loss of nutrients, etc. Like if I put it out to soak and for whatever reason it soaks for 2

Hello Jenna and welcome! Since this is your first post I will also be sending along your welcome message.
The short answer is that your hay should be soaked (if needed) for at least thirty minutes

30 to 60 minutes in cold water should be adequate. That said, very fibrous hays from late cuttings during a drought may not sufficiently reduce. You really need to test the hay after soaking and

Re: Winter grazing
I've seen my boarder's horse dig through 3' of snow to get at the grass so a motivated horse can easily dig.
Before letting my IR horse graze, I'd confirm insulin is well controlled withe bloodwork,
