No ideas on the diet side of things, but I do know my mini donkey gets bored and she loves the rubber feed tubs, my muck bucket, the apple-picker, anything but horse toys.

My mares ate their bedding too...I switched to rice hulls and at least now
it's pretty empty calories that won't kill them....

Beverly, Fred urgently needs another donkey (similar age, same sex) for a companion. Donkeys really do best with other donkeys, and they play like crazy with each other. Which is like working out

Donkey eating sawdust
My donkey Fred (no History) is better since Dr. Kellon responded to his insulin of 4 in June, telling me to increase his food. He was on only 4 pounds hay. Insulin is at 10 now.
He is on 6 pounds
