Re: hay core sampler
Just wanted to agree that IR test results can be misleading. When I did a comparison, the NIR result was ~9% and the wet lab was 10.3%. For some IR horses, that is not safe, especially mine...

EquilLix
Does anyone know about a horse lick called EquiLix? A friend of mine suggested looking into it as she gives it out at their local donkey rescue, since donkeys have a high chance of being overweight

new member- what to do about soaking hay in winter?
I think I have figured out how to have the guys at the barn soak the hay for my girl until I get her hay tested, but if it comes back high in sugar, what do you suggest doing in the winter?

Thanks Chanda. Unfortunately the owner of the barn where I board is less than appeasing!
She's giving me a hard time about having the guys help me soak her hay until I can get the hay tested.

Hi Valeree,
Can you please elaborate on what happened when you played pergolide catch up? I would appreciate it, thanks!

Hi Edie,
Just a thought - maybe you can talk to the owner/manager of the facility and ask if there is a place where hay from the load you test could be set aside and saved for just your horse as his

Re: hay core sampler
Eqi-Analytical still offers the free test with the purchase of the corer from them BUT the test is the Equi-tech analysis, which is the less expensive NIR testing rather than the wet chem analysis

Re: hay core sampler
Perhaps you could get the boarding facility to set aside some hay (once tested and you know it's safe), so that you don't have to test as often and adjust supplements as often.

Thank you! I've left a message for them as well. Since I board my horse at a facility where the hay comes in quite frequently I am thinking I am going to have to test it every time we get a new load

Re: hay core sampler
You might also check with your County Extension Agent to see if they have a hay core sampler you can borrow.

Re: hay core sampler
Well, I bought my hay core sampler a few years back from EquiAnalytical. They gave you one free analysis along with it at that time. Of course, things may have changed by now...

hay core sampler
Does anyone have a recommendation for where to borrow or buy a hay core sampler? Or do I have to have one to test the hay?
Thanks,

Re: Carrera's labwork results
Hi Melanie,
At baseline is the way an individual is genetically programmed. Leptin is a hormone that tells the body to "stop eating, you're full" by suppressing appetite. It isn't influenced by diet

Re: Carrera's labwork results
OK. I will ask the vet for an RX for pergolide. I am having trouble understanding the "Leptin tells you she is IR at baseline". Shawnee's leptin was in the normal range so he was not IR at baseline.
