Re: Urgent Invokana Horse Vinnie and Diet
Nancy,
I would hold for now and let him settle down in his new location. Scent is a big trigger too so if I didn't mention this before try heavy Vicks in his nostrils two or three times a day.

Update, we did get Vinnie moved into Summer's stall and she comes home from her ovarectomy surgery this afternoon, so I hope she tolerates the new location with that mare next door.

At least the pea protein should be palatable. He's doing OK. His TG are staying in a reasonable range but lower is always better as long as the bigger picture of attitude and foot comfort are

Thanks Dr Kellon, yep I do remember that about the lactate.
He is eating his full dose of L-Carnitine and I will get some pea protein to add. I have him eating BP again but it has to be smaller

I think it's worth a try, with the carnitine. Something isn't functioning correctly - whether too much glucose lost because glycogen stores are low, or difficulty processing the triglycerides because

Dr Kellon, for those of us like me with Vinnien who have been battling elevated tryglicerides, should we add pea protein?
Thanks Nan

Speaking of Ketones
Despite all the hype recently about ketogenic diets and how ketone bodies are good to have, they are not. In humans, production of ketone bodies mean the body is breaking down fat faster than it can

Yes, it's worth testing it now. Make sure you get insulin and glucose, too.

Re: High insulin
Hi Stacy,
With an insulin that high your mare is at risk of another acute laminitis. Anything above 80 uIU/ml is in the danger zone for this. I would do whatever you have to do to block her access
