Camelina has too high an omega-6:omega-3 ratio. The other oils you mentioned are OK but MUCH more expensive than flax and no better

What is it about Camelina oil that makes it not appropriate as an omega 3 source for horses? How about perilla oil? sachi inchi oil? and ahiflower oil?

You are where you need to be to get help for your boy..  I'm just a member but I want to say, just breathe and go thru the steps here. It can seem overwhelming but there are many here to help you thru those steps..  Hang in there, everyone here has been in your shoes and it's scary.  All the best.

Re: Jiaogulan Dose (was Acute laminitis - unable to control pain)

Shera Felde

Thanks, Sherry. Probably a month, increasing little by little but also losing some with the syringing. There is also some in her glycocemic eq. Do you know about the ginseng conflict?  I am still waiting for the ginseng and devil's claw to come. Just ordered the PEA and CBD after reading it's helping others. Story still doesn't want to walk with me. She seems to be in a holding pattern of pain even though she has had days of looking her old self. It is so hard to gauge what is preventing steady progress.

I currently feed vitamin e capsules in oil but it is pre mixed with her wet hay cubes the night before, hence the capsules have expanded and all that is all that is left . The inner contents have been absorbed into the  cubes.  Is this still effective.
Jewel wont take them in their whole form.

Updating CH

Buzz

I am using a tablet, which I think is my problem unfortunately.  I'm ready to go out and buy a computer! I have tried to upload updated case histories. When doing so is it supposed to replace the initial CH and delete it?  Not having much success! Help please as we are having an episode of laminitis and pergolide issues I would like to document.

Re: EMERGENCY

Sherry Morse

Hi Anne,

You'll get a full welcome message shortly, but to help you as quickly as possible we need to know exactly what his diet is at the moment as well as what his actual insulin, glucose and ACTH levels are.  Having pictures posted of his current trim as well having the x-rays will also help us help you.  If he is an IR/PPID horse Bute is contraindicated (details on this will be in your welcome letter).  Why is he on antibiotics and isox right now?

We have several members in Michigan so if you let us know where you are we may be able to direct you to professionals who are familiar with our protocols and can help you help your boy.  The biggest thing is removing the triggers that are causing him pain and this will take time but can be done, even at this stage.

For you, keep on breathing - we have had horses lose entire hooves and come back to soundness so don't give up on your boy yet.

EMERGENCY

anne@...

My 17 year old gelding has been battling laminitis since May. His metabolic panel shows he’s IR and borderline Cushing. We immediately altered his diet and put him on Heiro. He’s been in clogs, stalled full time. He had to have a tenotomy a month ago to stop rotation. He was doing great until this week. His left foot is trying to slough hoof and there’s no new wall growth. Yesterday’s X-ray looked good. Showed new sole growth but venogram showed almost no blood flow. A small capillary feeds one side, heel has some blood flow and front and other side have hardly any. He’s currently taking 2 scoops of Bute morning and night, 14 antibiotic pills morning and night, Heiro in the morning and isoxoprene morning and night. We give him aloe juice and papaya to protect stomach from Bute. Our vet says there is nothing more we can do. He’s back in soft rides and in pain. Please help!!!  I need to find a way to heal coronet and prevent hoof from sloughing or find a way to grow hoof without proper blood flow.

I added some recent photos of DP, lateral  of both fronts and the medial of the LF.  We are a little overdue for the LF trim, we decided to wait a week since he was a little sore and we were making big changes to the RF.

Re: Lavinia is there ever a right time for corrective shoes?

Thanks Lavinia, we thibk that us where we removed some hoof wall that had white line.  Yes we have been trimming every two weeks to keep the heels back where they should be and keep the toe back as well. Vinnie is in a period of sensitivity. We think the sensitivity from the toe medial side is because of bone loss.

He is tender on both feet right now mostly toe area in the lf and the rf we did alot of changes on Tuesday to really bring that toe back and get the heel back where it should be.

Given the hay issues I have had, some metabolic indications and foot sensitivity the plan is to give a week off, do rads and bloodwork Monday and take it from there.  In the meantime we did increase prascend by 0.25.

Thanks so much, Nan

Treating Candy for Ulcers and Wondering now about Cocoomega?

Shawn Gould

Hi Kirsten,
I saw your post when I got back from Tractor Supply! Lol, bought a bunch of ulcergard same as gastrogard and gave her 3/4 a tube and she got better overnight. And even better next 2 nights with same dose. I will dose her that for a week or so and then try a quarter of a tube for rest of course.

Cocoomega is a mix of chia, flax, and fish oil by uckele. I give 1 scoop am and pm till I hear differently. I thought I read it was OK by Dr. Kellon....? I'm pretty sure it says its ok for ecir horses on Uckele website, but now I'm second guessing everything. Maybe someone can speak to this?

Thanks Kirsten

Medication for farrier visit while on Jiaogulan?

Shawn Gould

Hi Sherry,

Candy has been on tested hay for years and various supplements. I ran out of magnesium. Nothing has been formally balanced. I just grabbed some Quiessence today for mag. and am slowly introducing salt, waiting for E to arrive. CANDY IS REALLY PICKY about anything that is suppose to go into her mouth, but she is pretty darn easy to syringe. I no longer can soak hay and Candy won't eat wet hay anyway at this juncture. Historically, she hates beet pulp, but I got some today just in case a miracle happens.

What I mean by treading is she shifts her weight back and forth in front. It has been much worse, but when I took her off phyto-quench I noticed It got more frequent. She is also not walking as well either. I took her off because I started Jiaogulan. I am worried about how she will handle farrier on Monday. Should I give it the night before and morning of or just see what happens with the Jiaogulan?Tomorrow is day 5 of Jiaogulan.

I am alone right now and probably wont be able to take photos till after farrier visit, but I will take them ASAP.

Thank you

Re: Vitamin E and oil

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

Any oil will enhance vitamin E absorption. Degradation occurs from heat, oxygen, exposure to other elements, not from mixing in oil. Camelina oil is not an appropriate omega-3 source for horses. Use flax or Chia.

Re: Use of Palmitoylethanolamide(PEA) for pain management

Eleanor Kellon, VMD

Bobbie,

I don't think it's a risk per se to do both but just know that they could counteract each other at least in terms of binding to endocannabinoid receptors. In other words, if hemp/CBD is obviously helping, adding PEA could potentially weaken that although it has other mechanisms. It might make sense to try to maximize the hemp/CBD dose first and see how that works. If not, try PEA.

Re: Teeny's obituary and a big thank you

What an amazing story and an amazing gift Teeny had. Bless you for giving her her best years and all the love she could hope to have in her lifetime. Good byes are the hardest but I hope her memories and the life lessons she taught to so many live on in the hearts of all those she touched. May God bless you and heal your loss of this beloved little giant.

My sincerest sympathies....
