Medication for farrier visit while on Jiaogulan?

Shawn Gould

Hi Sherry,

Candy has been on tested hay for years and various supplements. I ran out of magnesium. Nothing has been formally balanced. I just grabbed some Quiessence today for mag. and am slowly introducing salt, waiting for E to arrive. CANDY IS REALLY PICKY about anything that is suppose to go into her mouth, but she is pretty darn easy to syringe. I no longer can soak hay and Candy won't eat wet hay anyway at this juncture. Historically, she hates beet pulp, but I got some today just in case a miracle happens.

What I mean by treading is she shifts her weight back and forth in front. It has been much worse, but when I took her off phyto-quench I noticed It got more frequent. She is also not walking as well either. I took her off because I started Jiaogulan. I am worried about how she will handle farrier on Monday. Should I give it the night before and morning of or just see what happens with the Jiaogulan?Tomorrow is day 5 of Jiaogulan.

I am alone right now and probably wont be able to take photos till after farrier visit, but I will take them ASAP.

Thank you

Re: Teeny's obituary and a big thank you

Terri,

I had been wondering the last week or so how Teeny was doing and was afraid to ask.  Thank you so much for letting us know and I hope that for you all the huge hole her loss has created is able to fill soon.

Re: Vitamin E and oil

Any oil will enhance vitamin E absorption. Degradation occurs from heat, oxygen, exposure to other elements, not from mixing in oil. Camelina oil is not an appropriate omega-3 source for horses. Use flax or Chia.

Bobbie,

I don't think it's a risk per se to do both but just know that they could counteract each other at least in terms of binding to endocannabinoid receptors. In other words, if hemp/CBD is obviously helping, adding PEA could potentially weaken that although it has other mechanisms. It might make sense to try to maximize the hemp/CBD dose first and see how that works. If not, try PEA.

Re: Teeny's obituary and a big thank you

What an amazing story and an amazing gift Teeny had. Bless you for giving her her best years and all the love she could hope to have in her lifetime. Good byes are the hardest but I hope her memories and the life lessons she taught to so many live on in the hearts of all those she touched. May God bless you and heal your loss of this beloved little giant.

My sincerest sympathies....

Also Kirsten,
Which Vit. E powder from Brubacher's?  I saw several, but only one, I think Basic Nutrition or Basic something seemed to be just E, others all had Selenium which My Mad Barn AT+ will already have and that is not one to have too much of, correct?

are you recommended if to do one or the other but not both then?

I have been considering switching from ground Flax to Camellina oil for the omega's.  Would it be a suitable oil for mixing in a powdered Vit. E?  Also if you use human capsules, how many do the horses need?  And if I am understanding, the powdered vit. E only begins to degrade once the oil has been added?  IE Mad Barns

Hi Nancy,

I added a copy of the rad with abscess circled to Vinnie's album:

Has the farrier made any adjustments to the trim based on those Oct rads?

Hi Lavinia,
yes I did , we actually took off quite a bit, way more than I’m comfortable with actually. Her frog is really close to the end now. I tried to take more pictures but they didn’t turn out real well. I will put up what I have.
I guess I need to read up on the vertical part.
We just can’t seem to get that heel where we need them is why I had someone else do her last time, but we got her out and took more off.

Hemp and PEA have a potential to counteract each other at least in part since they both can attach to endocannabinoid receptors. The mechanism of action of PEA goes far beyond that though.

Re: Question about when to test ACTH

Linda,

Seasonal rise ends towards the end of November, although I would use Dec 21st my official "end date" just to be safe as it can last longer in PPID horses than in normal horses.

I think it would be reasonable to reduce the pergolide to 1.5mL now, then retest both horses after 3 weeks at that dose.  Assuming they are both well within normal limits at 1.5mL/day, then latest July would be when you will need to look at increasing the dose again so retesting then is advised.  You want to increase the dose then, before ACTH gets really high.  Keeping the ACTH in or below the middle of the normal range (ie low 20's, or lower) year-round is your goal.

As Lorna said, you can post what you have for a Case History.  It's better than nothing.  Even ignoring the "history" part and just putting in their current feed/exercise/medication conditions and last bloodwork results is very helpful and gives us something to look at before we try to help you.

Overdose of Prascend

Vicky Canuso

The two barn assistants gave my horse 2 full  doses (1  3/4 per dose total 3  1/2 pills) of his  Prascend this morning
He seems to be alright . Maybe a little  lethargic this afternoon.  What do I do about his dose (1 3/4 pills) tomorrow morning??   Should I give it to him or wait and give it to him in the afternoon or don't give it to him at all?. Please advise.   Thank you.

Hi Shawn,

The mineral balancing is important but I don't think it's critically urgent and I agree with Sherry that a few more days should be ok.  If I was you, I would wait until you know what to buy.

Jiaogulan is best given 2x a day, 20 min before a meal.

Did you see the recent thread on testing for ulcers on the Horsekeeping group?  https://ecir.groups.io/g/Horsekeeping/topic/tums_as_a_test_for_ulcers/71803024?p=,,,20,0,0,0::recentpostdate%2Fsticky,,,20,2,0,71803024
I thought Dr Kellon's post was quite helpful on how to test without scoping, then the discussion on omaprazole for treatment.

I don't know anything about Cocomega, so hopefully someone else can help answer your question on how much to give.  I don't think it's very much...  For Omega-3 FAs I personally feed home-ground flax that I keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks before feeding at 3 oz/day for my 900 lb horse (recommended is 2-4 oz).

Re: Use of Palmitoylethanolamide(PEA) for pain management

Cassie

Ellie is still on the Neurogan.  She is on the full spectrum version and not the THC free.  I feel that the hemp product is helpful, especially when I doubled the dose (two scoops).  After reading that the hemp and PEA might complement each other, I have kept her on a single scoop of the Neurogan.  She is in regular light/moderate work, so I should be able to get decent feedback to see if the results are consistent.

She is also on AL-CAR and RelyneGI.  I am avoiding NSAIDs due to her colic history.

I am curious about the UC Davis clinical trial treatment.  I have a theory that her colics might be influenced by inefficient chewing related to the THO, though she doesn't show discomfort while eating.

Exactly where he is sole sensitive too. Thank you so much Dr Kellon.  I really thought I was going crazy with this up and down nonsense a little off, the better, then off again then better...and then a streak of discomfort... so frustrating:)
