Re: Acceptable ulcer meds?

Deb Walker

Just googled it, and now I remember...I was told you couldn't just *stop* GUT once started because of some of the ingredients? Perhaps Dr. Kellon or someone else could comment?

Re: Acceptable ulcer meds?

Martha - His pergolide has been upped to 4mg and that made an immediate difference when it was changed a couple of months ago.

Patricia - I forgot about the product GUT. I had used that in the past and I guess even though it didn't cross my mind, I wasn't sure it would be OK for I/R & PPID. Something to think about. I really don't think it is stomach problems, but I guess a trial of trying it couldn't hurt. It's only money right :) :)  I swear, it never ends.

Thanks everyone for suggestions.

another question about storing hay in a shipping container

Re: High Manganese??

aphena89@...

Yes, I agree it’s odd that she’s so dismissive of hay testing with her masters in nutrition. . She’s saying I need to feed a balanced grain and has recommended Wellsolve so I think she wants to push the grain sales. Maybe I should send her these articles?!?

It’s very rare around Austin for anyone to test the hay. The place where I’ve been buying the hay with high manganese does test but they don’t test for iron or manganese, they did pull the core samples for me to test however, that was much appreciated.

Re: Exercise after laminitis episode - Princess

Lavinia Fiscaletti

Hi Amy,

Sorry this got missed.

Generally speaking, you want to wait to start formal exercise until a tight, realigning correct trim is in place and the feet have grown out at least 1/2 the damage that was done. It's good that she had a very short episode of obvious discomfort but the radiographs showed that her soles were thin, toes long, there was some sinking, heels were underrun. The few pictures in the photo album confirm several of these findings.

Is she still in reverse shoes? Is she still on Thyro-L? Has she lost any weight (other than decreasing the fat pads)? Have the results from the blood work come back yet?

To give you better answers, we'd also need to see a full set of current pix to see how the trim is progressing.

Re: Mustangs eating manure

Joanne Jordan

FWIW - I also have BLM mustangs. My younger gelding who is very submissive to my older gelding, appears obsessed with eating the older gelding's fresh (as in right out of the manure maker) poop.  If I chase him off, he returns to the pile immediately.  Very interesting what Tracy wrote about gut bacteria and submissiveness!!

They are both treated as if they are IR -- their hay is tested and measured out for 3 feedings/day. They are on a paddock paradise. They are supplemented as per ECIR recommendations.  Basically, all the stuff advocated here and still, the manure eating and constantly ravenous appetites.

Just wanted you to know you have good company.  We've had many mustangs through our place as we work with a rescue.  All wanted to eat everything ;-)

In my opinion, WIRX is in the same category as HEIRO until there are proven studies that it actually works.  As it consists of cinnamon and cranberry there's nothing in it that will do more to 'cure' IR than a controlled diet would.

Re: ECIR Group - We can't do it without you. UPDATE

UPDATE. As of 1:15 pm Central time, there have been new donations totaling $985. Thank you! Only $2,015 left to raise before 1/1/20 to turn $3,000 into $6,000. I REALLY THINK WE CAN MAKE THIS GOAL!

Nancy,

I managed to do a donation just in time. In the future, would it not be easier to use a PayPal account so that all the money pledged goes to ECIR ?
Or do you have to use third party systems for accountancy purposes ?

This is what A&M has to say about forage testing:

https://foragefax.tamu.edu/2019/09/20/hay-testing-know-what-youre-feeding/

http://www.sealynews.com/stories/hay-and-forage-producers-encouraged-to-submit-samples-for-analysis,79634?

When I first came on this group almost two decades ago, the idea of balancing a horse's diet to the hay analysis was virtually unheard of but producers of milk, beef, eggs, pork, etc. have been doing this for over a century because of the huge difference in makes in the health of their animals.

A vendor that claims hay testing results are unreliable has something to hide.

Hi Jennifer,

Most of us have gone through, still go through, the frustration of wondering just who to believe. You are in good company!

I always check on who is saying what.
In this case  a person selling hay is saying that testing hay is unreliable.(hogwash, incidentally) Could it be in her favour to say that?
Did she support her comment with any kind of facts?

If you read the messages, and Files, here about hay testing (using the correct tests,of course),and the awesome results which the horses show us,when put on a nutritional program of supplements  balanced to their hay, you know that you are reading unbiased information.
The horses prove the point to anyone who cares to pay attention, even someone with a Masters in animal nutrition.(yowzers!)

I'm hoping Kat is reading and has a minute.

Thanks!

I have checked with another local hay vendor today, she has her masters in animal nutrition from A&M and is telling me the hay testing results are basically very unreliable and she never tests the hay she sells. It’s all very confusing!

Heather, do you follow Dr. K. On FB? She put up an answer,on December 18th, for a person asking about liver cleanses.
I don't know what is in Alpha Omega, but the impression I get is that so-called liver cleanses for horses are a waste of money.

Hello,

does anyone know if the Alpha Omega Liver product is safe for IR horses?  Thoughts? And has anyone had any experience using it?
Thanks

Hi Nancy,

I've spent nearly an hour trying to log onto MightyCause to increase my monthly donation. I'm not succeeding. Can you tell me if you got monthly donations from me in 2019? I'm beginning to suspect that my wish to donation was not carried out.

Thank you,
Helen

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated to the ECIR Group in 2019.

Since Giving Tuesday, we have raised a total of $12,609. The busiest day of the giving year, and the last day to donate for 2019, will be tomorrow, December 31.

For those of you still considering a donation, we have $3,000 remaining in matching funds to be used to double donations before January 1, 2020. That's just 2 days to raise an additional $3,000. Will you help us turn $3,000 into $6,000? https://bit.ly/2PBDWK4

A very special thank you to those who have elected to become a recurring monthly donor. Making your donation a recurring monthly gift is an easy way to contribute. You can do so for as little as $5 a month.

Here are two links to help you learn all about your donation through Mightycause, a respected donor-advised 501(c)3, which allows for safe, worry-free donations via credit card or Paypal. You can donate one-time or as a recurring monthly donor.

Although I lost Calliope last October, the help I got from this group was essential to my ability to manage her laminitis during her last years. Thank you so much for the advice and support !

Every day that I spend with my beloved Shahtahr, who is now 25 years old and SOUND (I still ride him, and he came in 2nd on a 25 mile ride last year), I am grateful for the help I received from Dr. Kellon and her volunteers to pull him through his first founder episode 8 years ago, which led to his IR diagnosis - from diet and trim info, to miscellaneous questions I ask every now and then. Thank you!!!!

Without the ECIR group advice I would not be riding my sound! horse. I am very grateful.

As a practising Farrier for nigh on 56 years, it is a pleasure to finally meet up with ECIR.

Thank you isn't enough for ECIR group advise and support! But nevertheless please accept my most sincere gratitude!

Thanks again to all who will or have considered the ECIR Group Inc. as part of their year-end giving.

Have a wonderful, safe, New Year.
