Eating Minerals How much Cocosoya Safe?
Jennifer Boydstun
Hi There-
Happy to report T-Bird is eating his minerals with the addition of Cocosoya oil. I am really concerned though it smells really sweet. Is there an established safe amount that can be given in a 24 hour period? -- Jennifer Boydstun Folsom, Ca. Re: APF not working
Catherine Browne
Dr. Kellon,
Ok. I will see if I can get metformin from the vet. So it sounds like I can give both the Prascend and metformin together. Is that correct? And would he just need to be on it until December? thanks! -- Catherine November 2015, Powhatan, Virginia Woodstock Case History - https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Catherine%20and%20Woodstock |

Hi Patricia,
I didn't know which one to order either at first but I ended up getting the original. Woodstock doesn't like it much either but doesn't react as bad as other things I have had to give him in the past! -- Catherine November 2015, Powhatan, Virginia Woodstock Case History - https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Catherine%20and%20Woodstock |

Re: Puzzled a bit by disappointing labs
Tanna
Hello Brooke,
Were the conditions of your 10/31 test similar to those of your 7/8 test? Similar time of day? Length of time after last feed (grain, hay)? Exercise rates less? More? I would bow down to those with more expertise than I but I would think that ACTH and Leptin look good and that the increase of insulin is too minor to be of significant worry. -- Tanna April 2019, (Yahoo Group member 2008) |

Puzzled a bit by disappointing labs
Just got results back for Olive from 10/31. This is the first ACTH post diagnosis (7/8) and post-initiation of Prascend and discontinuing thyro-L. G/I Ratio; RISQI; MIRG
Thanks! |

Re: Laminitis. New general article today
To be fair, the criteria for diagnosing laminitis were all based on radiographs and no one has X-ray vision. That said, the more subtle clues of stretched white line, sometimes rings, and especially changes in how they move and how much are often missed.

Small monthly donation set up. I am so grateful of the help, support and knowledge this group has offered me. I wish I could give more, but I encourage all 'members' to do the same. A little each month will add up to a lot.

Re: Can I put the Prascend Pill in ONE Blueberry?
It sure seems like trying to hide it in a treat causes problems with some horses....why try to hide what you are doing, especially the smart ones seem to have figured out they are being deceived anyways? I make medicine giving a distinctly different event from treat giving.
IME with syringing in antibiotic paste (made from dissolving pills in water, sometimes as much as 20mL divided in 2 syringes), it might sound silly but I look him in the eye and say very clearly and seriously that "the doctor says he must take his medicine", several times if needed. The look on his face is priceless, but he tolerates it and once the medicine is in I always have something for him to eat to 'cleanse his palate' and get that yucky bitter taste out. "Sorry, doctor's orders and we are going to stand here until you take your medicine even if I have to stand here with you tied up all day, and afterwards you can have something to eat (hay, beet pulp, strawberry, whatever)"...just portraying that attitude, even if you really can't stand there all day, is really helpful. -- Kirsten and Shaku (IR) - 2019 Kitimat, BC, Canada ECIR Group Moderator Shaku's Photo Album |

Re: updates to case histories- folder disappeared
Everything looks good to me. You might wish to play with your signature just a bit more. The first line in your signature contains a set of duplicate links, a pretty one and a standard issue. You could delete everything after the word ‘Histories’ and it would still work fine. Your first post in this thread looked and worked fine. One of your files was uploaded by a moderator which is most likely the reason you can’t delete it. I’m sorry you were having trouble finding your files. I frequently feel the same way and then realize I’m searching in the wrong place or something similar.

Re: Which trim course to take?
Thanks - I need to remember to take new pics after his next trim. My farrier tightened him up a bit with his first appointment with her and he was a handful so I didn't grab any. Next one will be early Dec.
Yeah he is a horse I get so bummed about...Great camper (eats and drinks well and doesn't get frantic), huge feet, good frogs, nice build for endurance, young... but unridable :( He has his spot as a companion horse tho for my other guy (who of course is a harder keeper lol) and he is pasture sound/comfortable. -- - Griffin Jan 2018, Charlottesville, VA Prophecy Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Griffin%20and%20Prophecy Prophecy Photo Album: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=17115 |

Re: Laminitis. New general article today
I have not read the whole article,, but my take away from this quote is that owners AND those taking care of hooves, are clueless to the state of their horses. I know i was. Low grade laminitus goes unseen. It can be very subtle.

Re: Association between ACTH and gastric ulcers or RDC?
Hi Brooke,
Yes, it would be a LOT easier if they could talk! It's possible to keep ACTH in normal range during the rise if you start the increase before it is well on its way. This is essential if you want to avoid laminitis in horses with previous laminitis, especially fall to early winter laminitis. If the horse has never had laminitis but has elevated insulin, there is a laminitis risk during the rise. If the horse's insulin is normal, no laminitis risk but then the question is whether you should at least keep them within normal seasonal rise range as an indicator the hypertrophy is being controlled. Effective dose is going to vary individually. As a rule of thumb, many people go up by 1 mg and, as you said, watch for signs. The trick to having it go smoothly is to get good control before you get to the rise period. Yes, many horses can come down again late winter/early spring. -- Eleanor in PA www.drkellon.com 2 for 1 course sale |

Re: updates to case histories- folder disappeared
Hi Trisha
when you think your files are missing, I'm pretty sure you can search on the name of your file. See the search window in the upper right corner. I searched on your name and here is what I came up with. There are two Trishas in this list but there is a folder for you Hope and Dolly. https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/filessearch?q=trisha Once you get there, you'll need to update the link in your signature. Here are instructions. https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/wiki/New-Member%27s-Welcome -- Nancy C in NH ECIR Moderator 2003 ECIR Group Inc. President/Treasurer 2019-2020 Join us at the 2020 NO Laminitis! updates to case histories- folder disappeared
Trisha DePietro
Hi. Well, I uploaded my two updated case histories today. And I tried to delete the old ones, but they refused to be deleted. I did see everything (old and updated) in the file folder and now, I can't find my file at all. I also see that my signature does not have the link attached....hmmmmm...When I click on the blue link at the bottom of this email, nothing happens. When I go to search in Files...nothing shows up. So, I am wondering should I start a new file and upload again for both ponies? I did not create new histories...they are original history forms from May of 2018. Thanks. PS I read through all of the uploading of documents information, but couldn't seem to find anything about when your files are missing....
